Slow Down, Winnetka Police Warn

With the first week of school under our belts, remind drivers to slow down during the school year when there is heavier foot traffic and high volume of traffic.

"Watch for youngsters going to and from school," said Chief Patrick Kreis. "Some will be walking; others will be riding bikes, exiting buses or private vehicles. Be prepared to stop at the direction of crossing guards."

Police intend to keep a close eye on speed zones and stop sign violations, and remind readers that Illinois law now requires drivers to "stop" rather than "yield" to pedestrians. 

"When a school bus is stopped for the purpose of loading or unloading pupils and its 'stop signal arm' is extended, the law requires that motorists traveling in both directions stop and wait," said Kreis.

The top three areas of concern for Winnetka police are:
