Winnetka Approves $41M Stormwater Management Plan

Though trustees approved the plan, they haven't authorized construction or incurred any debt and plan to gather public feedback before moving ahead, Chicago Tribune reported.

Winnetka trustees recently approved moving ahead with a $41 million stormwater management plan and is planning to set up public hearings to gather feedback before moving ahead with construction, Chicago Tribune reported.

The plan includes the $34.5 million Willow Road tunnel, which will divert stormwater east into Lake Michigan and address flooding in five of the village’s drainage areas, and $7 million in smaller stormwater projects like the $4.3 million plan to improve a watershed in northwest Winnetka, the newspaper reported.

Now that trustees have given the green light to the $41 million stormwater plan, Winnetka residents could have an average annual stormwater utility fee of about $360—among the highest of such fees in the country.

Trustees are slated to discuss public outreach plans for the stormwater project at their June 11 study session, the Tribune reported. The village plans hold community meetings to pitch the project and gather inputs from residents this summer.
