North Shore's Top 10 Sports Moments in 2010 - 2011

As we prepare for another new school year, here's a look back. The baseball and boys basketball teams captured the first regional championships in North Shore history.

With the assistance of North Shore Country Day athletic director Patrick McHugh, here are the Top 10 moments in North Shore athletics over the past school year.

10. Girls Volleyball defeats University High for the first time in 15 years: Rallying back after losing a tough first set, North Shore hung on to defeat its conference rival 20-25, 25-9, 25-23. Reducing the number of service errors was key for the Raiders, who moved to 2-6 with the win.

9. Girls Basketball wins Thanksgiving Tournament with Short Roster: With only eight players on the roster, North Shore knew it was going to be a rebuilding year. But behind the steady play from star guard Kim Kahnweiler, North Shore won its own Thanksgiving tournament. All eight varsity players will return next year and the Raiders look to add some depth with some Middle School athletes.

With a ninth-place finish in the sectional meet, McCaleb became the first female runner from North Shore to qualify for the state since 2006.

5. Akainyah finishes in 14th place at state meet: The goal of every track athlete is to peak at the end of the season, and that’s exactly what junior Sam Akainyah did. Starting as the 32nd seed in the shotput at this year’s state championships, Akainyah threw a school-record and personal-best mark of 47 feet, 9 inches to take 14th place.

4. Boys Golf Places Second in Regional: Nick McCall claimed medalist honors with a 1-under 71 and North Shore finished second to Elgin St. Edward, 326-329. The Raiders missed out on a state tournament team berth by four strokes at the sectional meet, but McCall made it individually. s
