North Shore Roundup: Raiders Break School Milestones

Junior Sam Akainyah and senior Adam Griffin qualified for the track state championships.

Baseball: The North Shore team made history by winning the school's first regional championship with a 16-0 victory over St. Benedict. Jake Kann got the win, pitching a five-inning shutout while the Raiders got production throughout the lineup.

North Shore struggled against Morgan Park Academy in the regional semifinals, but pulled through with a 7-5 win to advance to the regional championship for the second straight year.

The Raiders will face host Putnam County on Wednesday evening in the sectional semifinals.

Coach Martin Freeman is happy with how his pitching rotation is setting up. He plans to start Jake Gordon and then use Kann in the sectional final if North Shore wins on Wednesday.

“The luxury I have now is [Kann] didn’t throw a lot of pitches so I can possibly even use both of them if needed,” Freeman said, regarding his pitching options for the next round. “But I’m looking for Jake Gordon to step up and have a big day. He’s been our leader all year, so I expect him to.”

Boys Track: Just like the girls track team a week earlier, the boys advanced two individuals to this week’s state championships.

Junior Sam Akainyah qualified by taking second place in the shot put (44 feet, 8 inches), becoming the first North Shore boys track athlete to qualify for the state meet in a field event.

Senior Adam Griffin ran 2 minutes, 0.69 seconds in the 800-meter, just under the state qualifying standard. Griffin finished fourth in one of the fastest 800-meter fields in sectional history. The first three runners all broke the previous record.

Girls Track: Annie Roge finished 15th in the second heat of the 3,200-meter and 17th overall, breaking the school record with a time of 11:56.60. Rachel Mabie cleared 4 feet, 11 inches in the high jump preliminaries, but didn’t make the finals.

Girls Soccer: After winning a regional championship, North Shore’s season ended with a 3-1 loss to Francis Parker in the sectional semifinals.

Boys Tennis: Participating in one of the state’s toughest sectionals, the Raiders failed to qualify any of their four entries for the state tournament.

Cameron Talty and Dylan Ball advanced to the quarterfinals before they lost to New Trier’s No. 1 doubles team. They were one win away from qualifying for this week’s state championships.
