Winnetka School District 36 Not Ready to Cut Taxes

One resident is urging the school district to use some of the $50 million it has in reserves to pay down $70 million in debt.

Some Winnetka residents have urged Winnetka Public Schools District 36 to lessen taxpayers’ financial burdens, but school officials say they are not ready to cut taxes because the district counts on getting 92 percent of its revenue from property tax rolls, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Winnetka resident Jim Wyant said the school district has a balance of about $50 million in various funds and is carrying about $70 million in debt, and urged the board to use its reserves to pay down debt to help lower residents’ taxes, according to the Tribune

Last year the school board approved levying the maximum amount of $35.8 million despite residents’ request for a lower tax levy increase.
