Why is Demonstrated Interest Important to Colleges?

At many private and some public colleges and universities, “demonstrated interest” factors into your admission decision.

Unless you apply Early Decision, you have until May 1st to decide which college you are attending.  The colleges therefore must figure out which students will most likely attend.  One way they do this is by determining your demonstrated interest.

·      Attending a college representative’s visit at your high school

·      Attending a local meeting (often held at an area hotel’s conference room)

·      Sending an email to an admissions officer, faculty, etc.  (Parent contact does not count here.)

·      Visiting the school’s booth at a college fair

·      Indicating specific knowledge about the school or an academic concentration in your essay.
