Winnetka’s Cherry Street Bridge Could Open for Traffic on Nov. 21

The village's contractor is close to completing the evaluation of the concrete on Cherry Street Bridge. Workers plan to complete concrete sealing on between Monday(11/19) and Tuesday (11/20), according to the village's website.   

Weather permitting, the bridge will be re-opened to vehicular traffic on Wednesday (11/21). In the meantime, traffic should continue to follow the Cherry Street detour on Oak Street.

Cherry Street Bridge will be closed until further notice according to village officials.

The bridge, originally expected to reopen on Nov. 2, needs additional work to repair the deteriorated area near the east end of the bridge, according to Susan Chen, assistant village engineer.

"The village learned that the area in question would require a full depth concrete deck repair rather than a partial depth repair, and that other areas of the bridge deck would require attention to address further delamination of the deck’s overlay," Chen wrote in an email.

Winnetka is currently in the process of obtaining quotes for the cost of the repair work. Detour to Oak Street will remain in place until the project has been completed, Chen said.

Work has started to repair Cherry Street Bridge in Winnetka and is expected to last for 10 days through Nov. 2, according to the village.

All traffic will be detoured one block north to Oak Street.

The $31,900 project consists of localized patching of the concrete bridge deck, repairing the western end of the southern parapet wall and sealing the deck and the parapet wall with a concrete sealer, according to a village document. The project is being funded out of the village’s Street Rehabilitation account.

The bridge’s concrete deck was last resurfaced in 1995 and even though the bridge is sound, there is an area on the east end of the deck where the overlay is delaminating and requires localized patching, according to a village document.

Winnetka trustees awarded the contract to Woodstock-based Alliance Contractors Inc. in September.
