Kates Appeals Circuit Court Decision, Appellate Court May Decide Friday

Kates and Spinney briefs are due this week to the Appellate Court, TribLocal reports.

Winnetka village trustee candidate Richard Kates is appealing the Cook County Circuit Court's decision that kept trustee Jennifer Spinney on the April 5 ballot, TribLocal reports.

A decision from the Appellate Court could be made on Friday, Kates told TribLocal.

In December, , alleging that her nominating petitions had invalid signatures. Spinney turned in 34 more signatures than the 290 required, but . Following a determination by a local election board that Spinney had the signatures required to remain on the ballot, Kates requested a judicial review of the proceedings by the Cook County Circuit Court. At a hearing Feb. 22 at the Daley Center, a judge ruled Spinney had 290 valid signatures on her nominating petitions -- the exact number required for her to appear on the ballot.

Spinney, who has served as a village trustee for the past two years, is seeking reelection independently after the Winnetka Caucus left her out of its picks for three open seats on the village board.

In addition to Kates, the Winnetka Caucus slated candidates Arthur Braun and Linda Pedian, a current trustee.
