Winnetka Police Chief To Leave Department

Chief Joseph DeLopez will become the vice chancellor for safety and security for the City Colleges of Chicago.

Winnetka Police Chief Joseph DeLopez will retire from the department to accept a position with the City Colleges of Chicago, according to a news release distributed Monday.

Deputy Chief Patrick Kreis will become interim chief Jan. 28.

Chief DeLopez was appointed to his current position in March 2002. Before he joined the Winnetka force, Chief DeLopez served 30 years with the Chicago Police Department. He last held the position of deputy superintendent of police.

"Although Chief DeLopez will certainly be missed, he leaves the Winnetka Police Department with a well-developed and highly skilled staff," the release reads.

Chief DeLopez has accepted a position as the vice chancellor for safety and security for the City Colleges of Chicago, overseeing eight campuses and seven satellite locations, according to the release.

“We wish Chief DeLopez success in his new role; and thank him for his exceptional leadership of the Winnetka Police Department. His record of contributions to the Village made Winnetka a better place to live," said Village Manager Rob Bahan.
