Winnetka Blotter: Thefts at New Trier; Teen in DUI Arrest

A summary of incidents reported in Winnetka from June 6-12

The Winnetka Police Department provided the following reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Please e-mail the editor with any questions or to provide proof of expungement.

June 12

Criminal Damage: A cab driver notified police after three males fled his taxi without paying a $16.80 fare at Oak Street and Sheridan Road and damaged the vehicle's window at 3:11 a.m.

Traffic Arrest: Oscar Castrejon, 21, of Gurnee, was arrested and charged with driving without a valid driver's license at 4:19 p.m. in the 900 block of Vernon Avenue. He also received citations for improper display of license plates and driving without insurance. His court date is July 11.

Theft: A boy's blue BMX bicycle valued at $100 was reported missing from a driveway in the 200 block of Poplar Street.

DUI Arrest: A 17-year-old boy from New Trier Township was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of drugs at 1:09 a.m. in the 0-100 block of Locust Road. He was also cited for improper lane usage, failure to use his turn signal and violating provisions of the Illinois graduated driver license. His court date is July 26.

June 9

Theft: A men's Giant bicycle and lock valued at $80 was reported stolen from a bike rack at New Trier High School.

Auto Burglary: Items valued at $3,100 were reported stolen from a car parked in the 1100 block of Chatfield Road. The pilfered property included Calloway golf clubs, a black and gray golf bag, golf balls and a black North Face jacket.

June 8

Theft: A girl's black Giant bicycle valued at $200 was reported stolen from a rack at Crow Island School. 

Theft: A silver boy's bike was reported stolen from a rack in the 700 block of Sheridan Road.

June 7

DUI Arrest: Marvin Renteria, 19, of Skokie, was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. His vehicle was stopped by  police at 3:01 a.m. at Sheridan Road and Melrose Avenue in Kenilworth. Renteria, whose court date is July 26, was also cited for failing to use his turn signal.

June 6

Theft: A woman reported a missing credit card, a silver Armani cuff watch and a silver cuff bracelet from her home in the 900 block of Willow Road. The items are valued at $350.

Traffic Arrest: Mauro Martinez, 39, of Waukegan, was stopped at 8:22 a.m. in the 900 block of Tower Road and arrested on a charge of driving without a valid driver's license. He was also cited for driving while using a hand-held cell phone. His court date is July 11.

June 3

Theft: An iPhone 4 in a black leather case was reported stolen from an unsecured classroom at New Trier High School. The item was valued at $199.

May 26

Theft: An red and black automotive diagnostic tool was reported missing from the New Trier High School automotive classroom. The Snap On Modis Automotive Diagnostic Scan Tool is valued at $5,681.

May 13

Theft: Several stolen items were returned after thefts in the boys' locker room at New Trier High School. Two iPhones and three Texas Instrument calculators, with a combined valued of $1,085, were among the missing property.

Two suspects were identified and the items were returned. Police reported that no complaints were filed in the case.
