Glencoe Blotter: Footprint Links Man to Burglary; Glencoe Teen Suspected in Break-in Spree

A summary of crimes reported in Glencoe from Aug. 18-24.

The following items were provided by the Glencoe Public Safety Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Please email the editor with any questions or to provide proof of expungement.

Aug. 24 

Trespassing — Two people were given warnings at 11:21 p.m. as they rode bikes on the beach in the first block of Park Avenue.

Aug. 23

Burglary Arrest — A Chicago man was arrested and charged with home burglary at 7:40 p.m. Police said they were called to the 400 block of Sunset Lane after a resident reported that a man was in his backyard. At first the man was thought to be a neighbor. But when he was confronted, the man said he was lost and asked for directions to an intersection about a half mile away. This made the Sunset resident suspicious, so he called police.

Police then picked up Jeffrey S. Levin, 52, of Chicago's West Rogers Park neighborhood, walking westbound on Dundee Road toward Skokie Ridge Drive. At the same time, they got a call of a house burglary in the 1000 block of Green Bay Road.

Police reported that muddy footprints found at that house matched those on Levin's shoes. He was charged with felony residential burglary and was being held at Cook County Jail on a $200,000 bond. His court date is Sept. 1.

Tool Stolen in Burglary — Tools were reported stolen from a Lewis Floor and Home carpet installers' vehicle at 10:15 a.m. in the 300 block of Adams Avenue. A Craftsman Mastercraft mechanical tool set worth $150 was stolen from the Northbrook company's vehicle between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Aug. 22.

Driving with Suspended License — Bonginkosi S. Mbonambi, 21, of Gurnee, was arrested and charged with driving with a suspended license at 1:05 p.m. at the corner of Dundee Road and Grove Street. Police stopped his green 1995 Pontiac Grand Am that was speeding at 48 mph in a 30 mph zone. His court date is Sept. 28.

Harassing Call — A woman in the 700 block of Woodridge Lane reported she wanted to file a complaint for telephone harassment at 6:01 p.m. 

Aug. 22

Theft — A $7,000 stolen bicycle was recovered. A Northbrook man was arrested and charged with theft.

Driving at Excessive Speed — Anthony J. Alberti, 33, of Deerfield, was arrested and charged with excessive speeding at 1:15 a.m. along the Edens Expressway near Tower Road. Police stopped his 2004 BMW coupe after it had been passing other cars at a high rate of speed. Police clocked the vehicle at 92 mph in a 55 mph zone. His court date is Sept. 28.

Camera Found — A Canon digital camera was found on the bike trail in the 700 block of Dundee Road at 12:32 p.m.

Aug. 21

Stray Dog — Lori G. Gray of Chicago was cited for letting her dog escape at 3:21 p.m. in the 700 block of Greenwood Avenue. Police reported that the black Lab had been on the loose.

Loud Party — A 17-year-old girl reported 10 youths showed up at her house in the 900 block of Green Bay Road to party, so she locked herself in her room at 10:25 p.m. Police said the teenager called them after a neighbor threatened to report the loud party to authorities.

Aug. 20

Driving with Suspended License — Anastacio Caballero, 18, of Vernon Hills, was arrested and charged with driving with a suspended license and speeding 89 mph in a 55 mph zone at 1:05 a.m. along the Edens Expressway near Tower Road. His court date is Nov. 2.

Aug. 19

Burglary — A Glencoe teenager was turned over to Glencoe authorities by Wilmette police at 2:09 p.m. after he was arrested and charged with burglary. Police said Danas Zekonis, 19, stole an iPod, a Garmin GPS device and Rayban sunglasses from an unlocked car in the 1100 block of Terrace Court on July 4.

Authorities said they suspected Zekonis was also responsible for up to 11 auto burglaries in Glencoe as well as other burglaries in New Trier Township during the summer.

Zekonis was released on $50,000 bail, and has a court date of Sept. 1.

Driving with Suspended License — Alejandro Ruiz, 25, of Chicago, was arrested and charged with driving with a suspended license. He was stopped in a white 1998 Chevy Astro van after he made an improper lane change at 10:49 a.m. in the 1200 block of Sheridan Road. His court date is Sept. 28.

Trespassing — Three Wilmette men were charged with wandering off the public beach and trespassing on private property at 5:16 p.m. at the corner of Dell Place and Lakeside Terrace. Police cited John H. Zuercher, 20, Matthew J. Soden, 25, and James Zuercher, 25.

Aug. 18

Vandalism — Five people in a red Mazda were reported to be throwing rocks at a vehicle at the Autohaus parking lot in the 1600 block of Frontage Road. Police investigated and found the car at 10:26 p.m. They reported the Mazda riders had been shooting Nerf arrows.

Suspicious Persons — A pair of teenage males sitting in a car at the Metra commuter lot at the corner of Green Bay Road and Park Avenue at 2 a.m. were approached by police and sent on their way.
