Winnetka Hydrant Testing May Discolor Water

The fire department will be testing fire hydrants during the weekdays, as part of routine yearly checks.

The will be testing fire hydrants on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. until the end of August. The fire department conducts these tests every summer to ensure the hydrants are functioning properly.

“We do basic maintenance on them to make sure they operate when we need them,” Captain Tom Hutchison said. “We want to make sure there is no damage to them, and we just need them in general good working condition.”

Because of the testing, the water in homes near the hydrants being tested that week may become discolored. The water is safe to drink, however the discolored water may damage laundry.
