10 Things To Do in Winnetka and the North Shore on Labor Day Weekend

For some people, the last long weekend of the summer is a good time to get away.  For others, it's an excellent opportunity to laze around.  But if you are looking around for something to do but have run out of ideas, here's a few for you to consider:

Green Bay or North Branch Trails - if the weather is nice, take a bike or walk along one of these local treasures.  The Green Bay Trail is closer to the lake and cuts through Wilmette, Keniworth, Wilmette, Glencoe, Highland Park and farther north.  The North Branch trail is a Cook County maintained trail that skirts through the forest preserves and is used, in general, by faster bikers.

Alabama at Ravinia Friday August 30 at 8:00.  See this classic country rock band celebrating 40 years of music making. Doors open at 5:00 pm.  As of this writing, lawn tickets are still available.   *Please scroll to the bottom of the web page.

Visit the Skokie Northshore Sculpture Park - the park is free and open for all.  It is located on the east side of McCormick Boulevard, between Dempster Street and Touhy Avenue, in Skokie, Illinois. The park is adjacent to the north channel of the Chicago River. The park combines recreational facilities with an outstanding exhibtion of over 60 large scale contemporary sculptures.

Car Show at Old Orchard Mall - see muscle cars, classic cars, motorcycles, hot rods and even some vintage military vehicles.  Show will be in the West parking lot in the Old Orchard Mall - 4999 Old Orchard Center in Skokie.  Free admission - also live bands and refresments.  This is the last car show of the summer.Monday, September 2, from 6-9 pm.

Free Shakespeare in the Park - see "The Taming of the Shrew" at Ingraham Park in Evanston. (located behind the Morton Civic Center at 2100 Ridge.)  Outdoor performances on Saturday and Sunday (August 31 and September 1) start at 3:00 and ends around 5:15pm with no intermission.  Bring your own chairs, picnic baskets or blankets.

Cheap Trick at Ravinia - can't make Alabama on Friday night?  Check out Cheap Trick playing two albums with a live orchestra. Saturday, August 31, concert starts at 7:30 pm and doors open at 5:00 pm. 

Family Day at Arlington Park - Not just horse racing today!  Take the kids and enjoy pony rides, a petting zoo, face painting and a bounce house.  Sunday September 1 - starts at 1:00 pm

Chicago Botanic Garden Farmer's Market - this bi-monthly event is held rain or shine. Buy produce, flowers, herbs and other sustainable products, talk with vendors, and sample some fresh fare.  9-3 pm at 1000 Lake Cook Rd in Glencoe.  Admission is free, but parking is $25 per car.  Sunday, September 1

Shared Streets Evanston - fun for the whole family from 1-5 on Sunday, September 1 Dempster between Chicago and Elmwood. The street will be blocked to promote biking and walking.  Activities include zumba and yoga lessons, bike info, games, food, art, music and more!

Didier Farms - visit the farm for fresh peaches, fudge, or pick your own vegetables. Located at 16678 W. Aptakisic, Lincolnshire.
