Winnetka Library Recovers from Flooding

It could be a month before services at the library are back to normal, one library official said.

Flood water from the July 23 storm has books at Winnetka branch of the circulating the “old-fashioned” way, according to library officials.

Librarians were copying book bar-codes by hand, which they entered into the library's computer inventory once their Internet was up and running this weekend.

Events at the library have been canceled for Sunday, July 31, but the library will continue to operate under normal hours, said Erin Maassen, public relations and marketing director for the library.

"Please check with the library," Maassen said to cardholders, "to see if the event is still taking place."

It could be a month before things are back to normal, Maassen said, because the carpets are waterlogged and have to be replaced, due to a basement door that flew open and flooded during the storm.

The walls and baseboards in the library also suffered flood damage, but Maassen assures patrons that no books were harmed.
