Winnetka First Responders Commemorate 9/11 Anniversary

Winnetka Police and Fire Departments made a strong showing at the annual Winnetka Patriot Day flag planting. Every year on Sept. 10, 2,977 flags are planted on the Village Green, in memory of those who died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"9/11 heroes came in so many forms," said Police Chief Kreis. "Beyond the first responders, there were office workers and employees at the Pentagon - both military and civilians. [As well as the passengers of Flight 93] They knew what they were up against and they chose to act, and they saved countless lives and possibly a national monument in the process."

The Police Department encourages all members of the force to attend the flag planting.

"[On Sept. 11] we remember not just the evil but the good in people, and the sacrifices people are willing to make for one another," Kreis said.
