Viewfinder: New Toy Store Opens in Winnetka

Leoleno opened its doors for the first time on March 5 and held an official ribbon cutting ceremony for guests and locals Monday.

Leoleno, Winnetka's newest toy store opened last week in Hubbard Woods. Most of Leoleno's products are European, as is its owner, Catharina Maerklin, who moved from Germany two years ago. There are wooden toys and strollers from Germany, mobiles and cribs from Denmark and a variety of the latest and best in the world of toys from around the globe. Maerklin said she just returned from the 2011 New York Toy Fair and has plans to stock shelves with the latest merchandise.

Maerklin's got other big plans for Leoleno too. On the day of the ribbon cutting, the store hosted a morning storytime in its play area, a partially enclosed, comfy space for kids to test out the toys Leoleno sells. Maerklin said she would like to continue these every Monday morning and in the near future, host events like music and movie nights, or offer German language lessons to children in the space.

Guests at the ribbon cutting showed Patch their love by posing with our Patch About Town sign.
