Area Students Awarded Rotary College Scholarships

One student from Regina Dominican and two each from Loyola Academy and New Trier receive honor from Wilmette-based charitable organization.

Five college scholarships were awarded to students from three area high schools by the Wilmette Rotary Club earlier this month.

The students hailed from , Loyola Academy and Regina Dominican High School, and received the awards at a ceremony attended by students, their parents and rotary club members, according to a press release from the Wilmette Rotary club dated June 7.

Among the winners were Sarah Ambrose of New Trier High School, who participated in refugee relief, inner-city tutoring and Skokie Lagoon clean-ups.

Christian Carr, also of New Trier, won the Rotary Jack Lehmann Award for his volunteer efforts as an election judge, in a church youth group and working in a soup kitchen.

The Regina Dominican High School winner was Shannon Kraemer, who is fluent in Spanish and has led service missions to a number of South American countries.

The two Loyola Academy scholarship recipients were Michelle Rocolcol, who has worked as a camp counselor for underprivileged children, and Paige Affinito who tutored children in violin and volunteered as a teacher for toddlers in Chicago.  

The Wilmette Rotary Club was founded in1924, and for the last 31 years has awarded local students with college scholarships.

College counselors nominate students based on leadership, responsibility, creativity, humility and work-ethic.

The scholarships are intended to promote literacy and community service.
