Winnetka Lawyer Gets Year in Prison in Refco Fraud

Joseph P. Collins, who was convicted in a $2.4 billion fraud, was sentenced Monday in Manhattan federal court.

A Winnetka lawyer convicted in a $2.4 billion fraud that led to the collapse of Refco Group Inc., one of the nation’s largest independent commodities firm, was sentenced Monday to a year and a day in prison in Manhattan federal court, ABC News reported.

Joseph P. Collins, 62, a former chief outside attorney for Refco, was sentenced Monday after his November conviction on charges including conspiracy, securities fraud and wire fraud, but Collins maintains that Refco executives never revealed the fraud to him, the newspaper reported.
