Spinney DUI Case Pushed Back to February

Winnetka Trustee Jennifer Spinney was in court today following her September DUI arrest.

Winnetka Trustee Jennifer Spinney made a brief appearance in court Monday in her DUI case, before the hearing was pushed back until Feb. 1. Neither Spinney nor her attorney would comment after she appeared in front of Judge Larry G. Axelrood at the Cook County Circuit Courthouse in Skokie Monday morning. This is the second time her court date has been pushed back. She has not yet entered a plea in the case. Spinney was pulled over Sept. 6 in Skokie after police say they say her making a series of traffic violations before being pulled over near the 9200 block of McCormick Boulevard. According to the police report, Spinney had bloodshot eyes, combined with slurred speech and a strong alcohol odor on her breath. Also, according to the report…

Winnetka Caucus Chair: Pedian 'Unfairly Targeted' In Village Trustee Race

Irma Villarreal, Winnetka Caucus chairwoman, released a statement Wednesday night on the election results.

The chairwoman of the Winnetka Caucus congratulated the village's newly elected trustees, board members and commissioners in a statement Wednesday night, and expressed disappointment that one village trustee candidate was not reelected. In Tuesday's consolidated election, incumbent Linda Pedian was not reelected to the Winnetka Village Board. Pedian was one of the three candidates the Winnetka Caucus slated to run for village trustee, along with Richard Kates and Arthur Braun. The three new trustees will be Kates, Braun and Jennifer Spinney. Spinney, also an incumbent, ran as an independent candidate when she was not slated by the Winnetka Caucus to run for village trustee. Winnetka Caucus Chairwoman Irma Villarreal said in an emailed …

Winnetka Village Trustee Candidate Q&A: Arthur Braun

Get to know the candidates before the April 5 election.

On April 5, Winnetka voters will vote for three candidates for village trustee. The candidates on the ballot are Richard Kates, Linda Pedian, Jennifer Spinney and Arthur Braun. Below is a Q&A with Arthur Braun. For information on the rest of the candidates, check Winnetka-Glencoe Patch this week. Winnetka-Glencoe Patch: How would you assess the Village Budget? Arthur Braun: Due to our philosophies of “pay as you go” and “hold tax increases to below the rate of inflation” it is probably the best in the state. These mottos have allowed Winnetka to operate without debt and with minimal tax increases while providing a high level of service and maintaining a reasonable reserve. As a result Winnetka enjoys an excellent credit rating, giving it …

UPDATED: Appellate Court Keeps Spinney on Ballot

Second ruling goes in candidate's favor in challenge over signatures on nominating petitions.

Jennifer Spinney remains on the April 5 ballot as a Winnetka village trustee candidate following an appellate court decision handed down Thursday. The decision affirmed a Cook County Circuit Court ruling that Spinney had exactly 290 valid signatures on her nominating petitions, which is the required number. Spinney filed as an independent candidate after she was not slated by the Winnetka Caucus, and Richard Kates, a caucus-backed candidate, challenged Spinney's candidacy in December. Spinney, who has served as a trustee for the past two years, said she is happy with the decision and is ready to begin her campaign. "If [Kates] were to decide to go on to the [state] Supreme Court, it's highly unlikely he would get anywhere," Spinney said. …

Yes, I agree with the appellate court's decision to allow Jeni Spinney to stay on the ballot. Her signature petitions have already been reviewed by the local election board and the circuit court and now all three authorities have agreed that she has enough valid signatures. To continue to protest this decision seems to be an insult to those people who have thoughtfully reviewed the material and …   more ›

Kates Asks For Judicial Review Of Spinney's Signatures

Richard Kates filed a petition for judicial review of the municipal electoral board's decisions on the disputed signatures.

Winnetka trustee candidate Richard Kates is challenging his opponent Jennifer Spinney and the board that certified her signatures. Kates filed a petition requesting the Cook County Circuit Court review the rulings made by the municipal electoral board last week on Spinney's nominating petitions. In the hearing, the municipal electoral board determined 292 valid signatures on Spinney's petitions, putting her on the ballot. "The electoral board has to follow the election code and they did things like allowing a telephone number instead of an address, or allow other things that aren't in the election code," Kates said. "They can't do that. Their proceedings were flawed." Kates said he filed the petition Monday afternoon. The petition is …

Why is Richard Kates SO afraid of having an opponent on the ballot? This is an election, not a coronation. How much is this personal vendetta, because one can only assume it is that, costing the taxpayers of Winnetka?   more ›

Spinney Remains On Ballot With 292 Valid Signatures

The municipal electoral board concluded its hearing Monday on the objections to Jennifer Spinney's candidate nomination signatures.

With just two signatures over the required minimum, Winnetka Trustee Jennifer Spinney's name will appear on the April 5 ballot. At a hearing Monday night, the municipal electoral board -- Village President Jessica Tucker, Village Manager Rob Bahan and Trustee E. King Poor -- ruled on disputed signatures and addresses on Spinney's candidate filing petitions. The board ultimately determined 292 valid signatures on the petitions -- two more than the 290 required. “What makes me happy is the residents here have the ability to have four people and choose three candidates,” Spinney said after the hearing. Spinney, who is running independently, will be included with the three trustee candidates slated by the Winnetka Caucus: Richard Kates, Linda …

It is a sad commentary that the Village of Winnetka Caucus believes that Mr Kates is a best candidate to to be slated. Not only is it distasteful that a slated candidate attempts to disqualify and disenfranchise Winnetka residents of their voice, undoubtedly he has needlessly cost the Village of Winnetka thousands of dollars in legal fees. Let the voters decide Mr. Kates, and may the BEST persons…   more ›
