Car Smashes Into Northfield Jewelry Store Window

Four were people inside shop, but no one was injured.

A car plowed into the front window of Frank Benders jewelry store last Thursday afternoon. Two customers were shopping at the time, but there were no injuries. A 74-year-old woman lost control of her Chevrolet and jumped the curb, slamming into the low brick wall just beneath the main display window at the store, which is located at 316 S. Happ Road.  "The noise was incredible," said Frank Bender, the owner, saying it sounded like a loud bang and pointing to the wall where the car's nose had pushed through the brick. "She didn't know why it had happened—she was shocked, but she wasn't disoriented," said Caryn Rubin, Bender's daughter. She added that it was just an accident. "We're just glad everyone was fine." The following items are taken from Winnetka Police Department reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Monday, Feb. 28 Theft: Police were called at 8:30 a.m. to AT&T's offices at the 1700 block of Winnetka Ave. According to the police report, 1,300 feet of wire at an estimated value of $9,274 was missing. The case is under investigation. Traffic Arrest: Police arrested a woman at 9:20 p.m. at Ash Street and Central Ave. for driving with a license that had been suspended in November 2009. She was released after paying a $1,500 recognizance bond. A court date was set for April 12.    …

Tuesday, Feb. 22 Hit-and-Run Arrest: A 21-year-old Chicago man was arrested on charges of hitting a car and fleeing the scene of the accident on Feb. 7, at Willow Road and Walnut Avenue. A man traveling westbound on Willow Road was waiting for the vehicle in front of him to turn when his car was hit in the rear-driver’s side by a Ford Mustang.
