Winnetka Schools Update Entry Procedures

Winnetka Public Schools District 36 schools will now be keeping the interior set of doors locked in addition to locking the exterior front doors.

Following the recent school shooting in Newtown, CT that left 27 dead, including 20 children, Winnetka Public Schools District 36 has updated its entry producers, according to an email a school official sent to parents Wednesday.  “At Crow Island, and in all of the elementary schools, in addition to locking the exterior front doors, we are now keeping the interior set of doors locked,” Dr. Julie Pfeffer, Crow Island School principal wrote in the email. “This way the entrance monitor has additional time to double-check all visitors.”  Pfeffer says in the past the school district has not “tightly practiced” requiring parents to show identification when entering the school but in accordance with the board policy, schools will now be requiring…

Are Your Chlidren Walking to School Wednesday?

International Walk to School Day is Wednesday, Oct. 3 and Hubbard Woods Elementary School is participating in the event.

With the goal of strengthening community life, while promoting health and safety, International Walk to School Day will be sponsored Wednesday, Oct. 3 by Hubbard Woods School in Winnetka.  National Walk to School Day was founded in 1997 by the Partnership for a Walkable America. In 2000, the event spread internationally to include Canada and the United Kingdom, according to the International Walk to School Day website.  A total of 3,626 schools are participating in the one-day event across the country, 191 of which are in Illinois, in 29 cities.  “Often, this one-day event becomes the catalyst to larger commitments and permanent improvements that make walking and bicycling to school safer transportation options year round,” said Lauren …

School Board Names New Hubbard Woods Principal

Dr. Daniel P. Ryan formerly taught at Hubbard Woods School and he will become the school's principal starting July 1.

Daniel P. Ryan is District 36's pick for the new principal of Hubbard Woods School. The district announced their choice Tuesday night in an email to parents. More than 100 applications were received for the opening, and Ryan was selected by a panel of teachers, parents and staff. Ryan will start with the district July 1. “I am very pleased to announce that Daniel will be joining us as the next principal of Hubbard Woods School," said Dr. Thomas Hagerman, who will become superintendent of District 36 on July 1.
