Which North Shore Community Has Most Mortgage-Free Homes?

More than 30 percent of Winnetka and Glencoe homeowners own their homes outright.

  Communities with a large segment of senior citizens or high median incomes tend to have the highest percentage mortgage-free homes, according to Crain’s Chicago Business.  In Winnetka, 32.4 percent or 3,591 of homes are mortgage free; in Glencoe that figure is 37.7 percent or 2,823 homes, according to Crain’s analysis. Winnetka, Wilmette, Glencoe Had Few Distressed-Home Sales in 2012

Fewer than 12 percent of home sales in the three North Shore suburbs were distressed-home sales.

  Winnetka, Wilmette and Glencoe were among the five suburbs with the fewest number of distressed-home sales in northern Illinois in 2012, Crain’s Chicago Business reported.  Distressed-home sales, such as foreclosures or short sales, accounted for 46.7 percent of all 2012 home sales in northern Illinois but in the three North Shore communities distressed-home sales accounted for fewer than 12 percent of all home sales—only 8 percent of home sales were distressed sales in Winnetka, that figure was 10.1 percent in Wilmette and 11.9 percent in Glencoe, Crain’s Chicago Business reported.  Related Coverage

Former Chicago Mercantile Exchange Chairman Lists Glencoe Mansion for $3.5 Million

Leo Melamed has put his mansion at Sunrise Circle on the market.

Financial market innovator Leo Melamed has put his Glencoe mansion on the market for $3.5 million.  The former Chicago Mercantile Exchange chairman told the Chicago Tribune that “We’re at the time in our lives when all our friends have moved back downtown to the city, and we’re doing that as well. There’s nothing unusual about it.”  Designed by Edward Dart, the mansion at 350 Sunrise Circle features seven bedrooms, four full and two half bath, an outdoor pool, pool house, two fire places, large dressing room and a three-car garage.  The home, listed at $3,495,000 on the Hudson Company’s website, is just shy of joining two other Glencoe homes that recently sold for more than $4 million.  Love peeking inside luxurious mansions on the North …

Glencoe Home Joins $4 Million-Plus Club

The home was sold by the estate of the late Florence Boone who was president of the Village of Glencoe from 1976 to 1985.

A home on Longwood Road in Glencoe recently sold for $4.5 million, joining its neighbor at 521 Longwood Road in the $4 million-plus club, according to ChicagoMag.com.  The estate of Florence Boone sold the homes; both sit on the bluff above Lake Michigan and have access to private beach.  The 1.10-acre home at 521 Longwood Rd. sold for $4.7 million in August, while the other sold for $4.5 million in early October, according to ChicagoMag.com  Boone, president of the Village of Glencoe from 1976 to 1985, passed away at 93 years old in April, according to Donnellan Family Funeral Services.  There are currently five properties listed above $4 million in Glencoe, according to RealEstateAOL.com  Love peeking inside luxurious mansions on the …
