Sightings of an animal resembling a cougar started in April. Public Safety Officers are yet to find tracks or other hard evidence of the animal.
The Village was alerted residents that the Glencoe Public Safety Department has received recent reports of a large cat-type animal resembling a cougar near the Lake Michigan bluff/shoreline, according to a Village of Northbrook staff memo. The first sighting occurred on the morning of April 15 on the bluff below the Hazel Avenue overlook. A resident on an early morning walk observed a large cat, which was lying down, but rose to its feet and disappeared into the heavy brush. The second sighting was on the evening of July 26. A Glencoe Public Safety employee witnessed a large cat cross the street at Dell & Lakeside and walk down towards the lake. The employee described the cat as resembling a cougar. The Public Safety Officers made efforts …
Sand creatures, castles, other creations compete for prizes Sunday at Glencoe Beach.
The Glencoe Park District hosted its annual Family Sand Sculpting Contest Sunday afternoon at Glencoe Beach. Participants competed for a win in four catergories: best animal, best castle, best sculpture, and most creative sculpture. Participation in the competition was free with admission to the beach. About 100 beachgoers gathered to watch or take part in the contest, which resulted in just under a dozen sculptures. Creations this year included a turtle, two sea monsters, a tribute to the Olympics, an alien, a couple of castles, and even a mermaid. Winners received a Glencoe Park District beach towel and a ticket for free admission to the beach. David Johnson, facility manager for the park district, says the contest allows them to …

Opponents of a fence on Glencoe’s Dell Place street ends got a big victory Thursday as Glencoe trustees voted 6-1 to not put a barrier at the street end near the beach. All trustees, except Trustee Joe Keefe, chose to accept the recommendation of the Street Ends Task Force that putting up a fence at Dell Place street end would raise public safety concerns among others. Trustees, however, did not rule out that a fence may be needed at Dell Place in the future. “If you put that fence up the only people that are going to go around that fence are the people we don’t want down there and you are going to make it harder for public safety to get down there when they want to get down there because they are not going to jump or climb the fence,” …

Agreement between two park districts allows resident rates for other community's pool and beach passes, and has resulted in increases in use for both, 'Wilmette Life' reports.
A deal struck betweeen the Glencoe and Northbrook park districts has seen great success this summer season, according to Wilmette News. More than 700 Northbrook residents purchased Glencoe beach passes for the 2012 season, while nearly 50 Glencoe residents bought pool passes to have access at Northbrook's two aquatic centers, the article reports. Both communities are offering resident rates to the other as part of the agreement. Similar partnerships between Glenview and Wilmette and Winnetka and Wilmette were terminated in the past due to lack of partication, Wilmette news reported.

This is a great idea. Winnetka briefly had a similar arrangement with the Glenview Park district a few years ago. Not any longer, though.   more ›
Jurisdiction for the 66-foot-wide beach should transfer from village to park district leadership, says Joe Keefe.
Huge opposition turnout has board sending public access controversy for a task force's input.
They posted fliers in the Glencoe Public Library, asking people to come to the village board meeting to protect public access to the lake, citing singer Joni Mitchell's lyrics: “You don't know what you've got till it's gone.” They packed the Glencoe Village Hall, with residents streaming into the hall behind the chambers as well as filling the extra rows of folding chairs set up in the upstairs room where the board of trustees meet. Their agenda: to keep Dell Place Beach, a popular summer refuge for local teenagers, open and free to the public. “I wonder why we always have money for fencing but we don't have money for improvements,” said Michael Glass, who helped organize efforts to keep the beach open. “The more accessible we make it, the…

How did a new fence (with padlock) get quietly installed @South Avenue -- on Village property, giving the appearance that it belongs to the new gigantic house recently built at South & Lakeside?? Were they able to purchase Lakefront Village property? Or get a fence permit passed through Village Hall?? Very curious to neighbors who no longer have access.   more ›
