Tips To Ward Off The Whooping Cough In Your Neighborhood

A case of pertussis was confirmed at Glencoe Central School and other cases were also confirmed last month in Winnetka.

With temperatures dipping to below freezing, colds, flu and stomach bugs rapidly spread this time of year as everyone fights to stay warm. But there's another type of illness that has been on the rise for children—the whooping cough. A case was recently confirmed at Central School in Glencoe. In November, the Winnetka Public Schools notified parents that some students had confirmed cases of whooping cough at Carleton Washburne School. Dr. Jim Olson of Kids Heath Partners in Skokie said whooping cough, which can be fatal to infants, usually "starts off like a cold, and at the normal time a cold starts to get better, the cough begins to get a lot worse." Whooping Cough Confirmed At Carleton Washburne

5 cases reported among middle school students in Winnetka.

Five cases of whooping cough (pertussis) have been confirmed among students at Carleton Washburne School in Winnetka since Oct. 19, according to a notice on the district's website and a letter sent home to parents. Other cases have been identified in the general community, according to the letter sent home Oct. 27 to Washburne parents from the Cook County Department of Public Health. No other cases were identified at any other schools in the Winnetka Public Schools District 36. The letter advises parents to check if their child has received the adolescent pertussis booster shot, and to keep their child home from school if he or she has a cough.
