The U.S. Coast Guard issued an alert late Tuesday afternoon.
Keen on diving into Lake Michigan this week? The U.S. Coast Guard is advising swimmers to take caution in light of "very strong winds and dangerous sea conditions," according to a statement issued Tuesday afternoon. "It's imperative that those who recreate on the Great Lakes exhibit personal responsibility for their safety and the safety of others," said Lt. Cmdr. Sean Brady, commanding officer of Sector Field Office Grand Haven, Mich, in the press release. “Rip tides and rip currents can develop with little notice, and there are no visual indicators of these from the beach. U.S. Coast Guard helicopter reached the site about 11:30 a.m.
Three people were rescued from a tugboat about 11:30 a.m. Saturday after the boat and two construction barges ran aground on a rock shoal about 150 yards off the coast of Glencoe. No injuries were reported and the rescue took place without incident, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. A rescue helicopter was dispatched after the U.S. Coast Guard received distress signals from the tugboat Kristin J. about 9 a.m. The crew on the tugboat reported grounding on the shoal around 12 a.m. Saturday but called for help after the boat began taking on water, according to a U.S. Coast Guard press release. The tugboat and two barges were still run aground on the shoal as of Saturday night. The tugboat is carrying 3500 gallons of diesel fuel, according to…
