Schneider, Dold See Small Business Reducing Unemployment

With only 80,000 new jobs added to the economy in June, job creation promises to be a major campaign issue for Congress. Take the Patch poll voicing your opinion on the best way to add jobs.

Small business is the economic force both Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) and his Democratic opponent in the Nov. 6 general election, Brad Schneider of Deerfield, see as the country’s job creation force. While Schneider and Dold think America’s small businesses need easier access to capital and less regulatory burden, their campaigns are wasting little time branding the other as more extreme than their words show. Earlier: Dold, Schneider Try To Defy Labels A firm idea of how to create jobs promises to be a key component of the fall campaign in the wake of Friday’s report showing only 80,000 new jobs created in June. Unemployment remains at 8.2 percent with underemployment at 14.9 percent, according to a report on CNBC. Both graduates of…

To some of you who think Dold should pay his employees at Rose Pest Solution any overtime: Congressman Robert Dold does not steal any money from his employees. Those money belong to the Company and thus, to the owner. Besides, the overtime laws favor the lazy employees and I hope Congressman Dold will change them because paying an employee overtime might hurt the business up to the point of …   more ›

New Trier Attracting New Businesses Despite Economy

The five New Trier communities generally have lower vacancy rates for retail properties than the rest of the Chicago area.

In spite of the recession and its sluggish aftermath, new businesses are still moving into New Trier Township communities. With the exception of Glencoe, the communities all have vacancy rates below the 9.5 percent average for the Chicago area. Many of the communities have vacancy rates more in line with the boom days of 2004 to 2007, when the area's rate was less than 8 percent for all but one quarter. Patch surveyed the communities to get business development and municipal officials' takes on the business climate in each one. Wilmette While officials and residents wait to see if the big catch — Walgreen’s — eventually moves into the sub-divided former Borders store in Edens Plaza, other businesses have steadily set up shop since the …

For 19th Issue, Winnetka Ornament Features Saints Faith, Hope and Charity Parish

Phototronics, at 740 Elm St., produces the 2011 Winnetka ornament.

Looking for an easy holiday gift? Consider the annual Winnetka ornament, which features a different Winnetka building each year. This year the Saints Faith, Hope and Charity Parish was chosen because the Catholic institution is celebrating its 75th anniversary. It is also the fourth in a series of churches, according to Winnetka resident and producer Betty Skalski. Skalski sells the handmade ornaments at Phototronics, 740 Elm St., and said this is the 19th installment of ornaments. Each one costs $42, of which $25 dollars is tax-deductible. Part of the sale is donated to the Winnetka Village Holiday Lighting Fund. "Our first ornament was the "Home Alone" house on Lincoln, as the movie had just come out two years before in 1990," she said…

Reindeer Land at Chalet Nursery

The Wilmette garden center celebrated the season with a weekend bash.

Despite the gloomy weather, parents and kids of all ages flocked to Wilmette’s Chalet Nursery Saturday and Sunday for their annual Family Holiday Celebration. The huge space was rich with the smell of the holidays, with customers sipping free apple cider and roasting s’mores over an open fire as they took a break from browsing the huge selection of live Christmas trees, seasonal plants and decorations. “Even though it was wet, we had a lot of people,” said Tony Fulmer, Chalet’s retail manager. “We want the holidays to be fun. It’s important to have things for families to do together.” Earlier: Chalet garden designer named ICN Professional of the Year Kids and their parents crowded into an outdoor tent watching the Chicago-based entertainer…

Book Store Offers Vintage Goods, Community Convos

The latest addition to the Winnetka shopping district carries some old favorites along with rare finds in a cozy, modern day salon setting.

As the afternoons grow darker faster, Winnekta streets shine bright with the addition of new business. Adding to the glow is the newly-opened Round Table Books. The store's Nov. 18 opening party and ribbon cutting drew around 100 people in from the fall chill. “People have literally been banging on the door to take a look inside,” Arthur Frank, proprietor and managing partner of Round Table, said of the community’s reaction in the weeks before the opening. “I felt good about this neighborhood.  I think people are ready for this type of store.” Related: Think Outside the Box (Stores) Round Table Books carries used and antique books, ranging from the familiar to the extremely rare. An Extra Shot With James

Think Outside the Box (Stores)

Stay home on Black Friday and start shopping on Small Business Saturday

Two things for those of you out there who have been reading An Extra Shot for awhile: you’re what I am thankful for this year and you might recall that I am a bit of a grouch when it comes to holiday shopping. I feel all of America’s problems are encapsulated in the spirit of Black Friday.  No, spirit is a poor choice of words. Spirit implies that Black Friday has a soul. It doesn’t.  It’s a cold and loveless thing, a mass of impulsive humanity clamoring and clawing on top of one another for flat-screen TVs. Of course I have been accused of being overly dramatic in the past. I’ve also been called neurotic, devilishly handsome and a compulsive liar. Still, I think my disdain for this anti-holiday is justified. There is just something so …
