Dolly is a genuine doll. She was found abandoned in a garage and was so grateful to have been rescued. This little lady is a striking 4-1/2-year-old brown and white tabby with a beautiful pattern in her fur. Her face is perfectly round, giving her a wide-eyed, angelic appearance. QUICKSTEP is a very friendly 11-month-old lap cat. He is a super fun guy that absolutely loves having his ears and neck scratched, and he will roll his head to the side to let you know just how much he appreciates the massage. Quickstep was found outside as a young kitten in December of 2010 by a Good Samaritan. He has the shiniest black coat with very cute stripes underneath. After a long day of exploring, Patch loves to cuddle up with people. Animal welfare groups and food pantries provide assistance for pets whose owners have fallen on hard times
The ASPCA estimates that between 5 million 7 million cats and dogs wind up in shelters every year. The reasons vary, but many are given up by their owners. Nearly half are euthanized because no one adopts them. This weighed heavily in my decision to go to a local shelter, rather than a pet store or breeder, when I adopted a dog back in September. At the time, a staff member at the shelter told me that I was really saving two animals: my dog Kara and the dog she was leaving a space for. The past two years have seen unprecedented overcrowding in animal shelters because of the economy.
