Jan Strube Flemming spent her forty-year career in the Wholesale Produce Business in Chicago as part of the family business Strube Celery and Vegetable Company.

Obituary: Ann Whitfield Roberts of Northfield

Ann Whitfield Roberts grew up in Winnetka and worked for Time-Life Magazine and a theatrical agency in New York City before moving to Northfield.

She grew up in Winnetka, IL, where she attended North Shore Country Day School through the 9th grade. She attended and graduated from Westover School, Middlebury, CT in 1953. After earning an Associate of Arts degree from Briarcliff Jr. College in Briartcliff Manor, NY in 1955, she worked in New York City for Time-Life Magazine and then a Theatrical Agency where Peter Falk and Bradford Dillman were clients. While in New York, she met John H. Roberts who was serving in the U. S. Navy and they were married in March 1957. They moved to Grosse Pointe, MI in 1958 where their daughter, Juli …

Obituary: Nona Cox, Former New Trier Teacher

Nona Cox taught U.S. History, Political Science and Modern China at NTHS, and also studied in England and China.

  Nona Cox, age 86 of Chicago was the best friend and sister of the late Adele M. Cox.  Miss Cox received a Bachelor’s degree from Loyola University, Chicago, IL and a Master’s degree from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL both in History, with sabbatical studies at Cambridge University, Cambridge, England and in China during the early 1970s. Miss Cox was the former assistant to the late Governor & Ambassador Adlai Stevenson, II and the former teacher of U.S. History, Political Science and Modern China (1965 to 1983) at New Trier High School. Barry Lind, Monetary Markets Pioneer, Dies

Lind, of Winnetka, founded one of the nation’s largest discount futures brokerages. He was hit by a car in California Wednesday.

Winnetka resident, monetary markets pioneer, co-creator of the International Monetary Market and former Chicago Mercantile Exchange board of directors member Barry Lind, 74, died after being hit by a car in Rancho Mirage in California on Wednesday night, the Chicago Tribune reported.  Authorities in Riverside County, CA. told the Chicago Tribune that Lind was crossing a street to assist someone else that had been involved in a traffic accident when he was hit by a car. While the accident remains under investigation, it dos not appear that alcohol was a factor in the crash.  Lind began working at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange in 1962 and founded the brokerage firm Lind-Waldock and Co. in 1965, which was one of the first firms to market …

Internet Activist Aaron Swartz's Teachers Remember 'Brilliant' Student

The Internet pioneer passed away this weekend in an apparent suicide. He was a student at North Shore Country Day School and grew up in Highland Park. His funeral is Tuesday morning.

Teachers and administrators at North Shore Country Day School in Winnetka remember former student Aaron Swartz as extremely intelligent and curious. Swartz, an Internet activist, co-creator of social news website Reddit and founder of Demand Progress, was found dead in an apparent suicide on Friday in his apartment in Brooklyn. He was 26. Swartz grew up in Highland Park and attended North Shore Country Day School through 9th grade. “He was a very creative boy and a very clever and bright child,” said Pam Whalley, head of lower school. “He was always engaged in school work.
