North Shore Country Day Students Recognized for Literary Talent

Three students received the Gold Key recognition, the highest level of achievement at the regional level, in the 2013 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

  Three North Shore Country Day School students were recently recognized for their literary talent and selected for the Gold Key recognition, the highest level of achievement for student artists and writers at the regional level, in the 2013 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, Chicago Tribune reported.  A panel of judges chose the following works to receive a Gold Key: Josh Hoeflich, 16, wrote a persona essay titled Jacob and I about his relationship with his brother; Declan Falls, 16, wrote a short story titled The Lamarckian about 19th-century biologist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck; and Hayun Cho, 18, was recognized for her portifolio submission, which included poetry and personal essays, Chicago Tribune reported.  The Scholastic Art and Writing…

New NSCDS Football Coach Named

North Shore Country Day School Assistant Coach Kevin Darling has been named the team's new head coach.

North Shore Country Day School has named Kevin Darling, who served as the assistant coach last season, the team's new head coach, an article by Wilmette Life states. Darling will be taking over the program from Jim Deuble and Fred Miller. Miller is leaving NSCDS to pursue coaching at the college or NFL level. Deuble, after 23 years, will be scaling back and working as an assistant coach.  “I am looking forward to having the opportunity to have a positive impact on student-athletes,” Darling, works full-time as a personal trainer at Redefined Fitness and Physical Therapy in Wilmette, told the Wilmette Life. “I want them to have the same well-rounded experience as I had playing the game.” For more news on high school sports, 'like' Patch on …

Winnetka's North Shore Country Day School to Renovate Auditorium, Arts Center

The Winnetka school announced plans to update some buildings in June 2013, Winnetka Current reports.

  Winnetka’s North Shore Country Day School will start updating its auditorium and arts center starting June 2013 and complete the work in 2014, Winnetka Current reports.  The cost to restore and renovate the auditorium and arts center is expected to cost $8 million and will interior work such as updating life-safety systems, security improvements and more energy-efficient mechanical systems, as well as exterior work such as replacing the auditorium roof, adding air conditioning in two buildings, painting and routine maintenance, Winnetka Current reports.  North Shore Country Day School, 310 Green Bay Rd., is a private school that draws students from more than 23 suburbs and the city of Chicago.  Related Coverage

Internet Activist Aaron Swartz's Teachers Remember 'Brilliant' Student

The Internet pioneer passed away this weekend in an apparent suicide. He was a student at North Shore Country Day School and grew up in Highland Park. His funeral is Tuesday morning.

Teachers and administrators at North Shore Country Day School in Winnetka remember former student Aaron Swartz as extremely intelligent and curious. Swartz, an Internet activist, co-creator of social news website Reddit and founder of Demand Progress, was found dead in an apparent suicide on Friday in his apartment in Brooklyn. He was 26. Swartz grew up in Highland Park and attended North Shore Country Day School through 9th grade. “He was a very creative boy and a very clever and bright child,” said Pam Whalley, head of lower school. “He was always engaged in school work. North Shore Educator Volunteer Teaches in Kenya

The North Shore teacher talked with Kenyan teenage girls about how to make good choices in regards to their bodies, friends and schoolwork.

Information provided by North Shore Country Day School.  In November, North Shore Country Day School Academic Integrator Katie Kirsch traveled to Nairobi, Kenya, to volunteer with children. She went as part of a team affiliated with Be Free Revolution, a non-profit that sells Kenyan-made craft products to benefit communities in Kenya. The funds provide counseling for victims of rape and violence and supply local mentors for children in need.  “This organization spoke to me because they partner with schools.
