New Trier Student Raises Money for Special Olympics

Senior Fitz Bowen said coaching the school’s golf team was a source of “constant joy.”

Kenilworth resident Fitz Bowen was a captain of the New Trier High School JV lacrosse team his sophomore year, so he was stunned when he was cut from the varsity team as a junior. “I needed to find something that would get me out of myself, because when you don’t make a sports team that you’re expecting to make, you’re mad at yourself,” Bowen said. “The other game I play is golf and that’s a game of ups and downs as well, so I couldn’t always count on that. I need something I could find constant joy in.” Bowen found that joy volunteering for Special Olympics. He’d done some work with the organization before and decided to pursue it further by volunteering to coach the high school’s special needs students in soccer and track every Tuesday …

New Trier Plans to Change Tech Policy to Include Cell Phone Use

New Trier Township High School District 203 school board proposed eliminating the current stand-alone cell phone policy and including cell phone use regulations in its tech policy.

New Trier High School may soon eliminate its cell phone policy but that doesn't mean the school district will allow students free rein over cell phone use. Under a proposed change, New Trier Township High School District 203's stand-alone cell phone policy may be eliminated, and cell phone use rules will be included in the district's tech policy. School board members members discussed proposed changes to the school’s staff and student technology policy that would recognize changes in the way technology is used at the May 21 board meeting at the school’s Northfield Campus. The school also has a Winnetka Campus. “The cellular phone is no longer just a phone,” said District 203 Superintendent Linda Yonke. “It’s a computer; it’s a camera; it’s…

After Selling 800 Ice Creams, New Trier Sophomores Donate to Soup Kitchen

In addition to preparing lunch on Tuesday, the students presented a check for $500 to the Second Baptist Church in Evanston. The sophomores raised the money by selling Dairy Queen "Blizzards" at lunchtime.

On Tuesday morning, a dozen students could be found mixing salads, mopping floors and washing tables at the soup kitchen in Second Baptist Church in Evanston. While it isn't the typical lesson plan for a sophomore English class at New Trier High School, one teacher said their work fit into the larger picture. "We're trying to bring what they learn in class full-circle to identify with issues, which makes for a much more fulfilling experience for everyone involved," said Pat Gillie, who was referring to their class project on poverty in America. "You also see some students identify themselves as leaders in the process." Related: New Trier Librarian Determined to Keep Haiti's Needs in People's Minds In addition to pitching in for Tuesday's …
