Got up a little testy this morning. Of course, looking at the bigger picture, the Chicago metropolitan area has a lot to crow about regarding open enrollment secondary education. While the price of admission is the ability to move to the district, there are generally affordable ways to get a great education all over the suburbs.   more ›

New Trier High School’s Class of 2013 are hoping to use the funds raised to build a home in Waukegan for a single mother of two children.

New Trier High School students recently brought the summer fun to wintery North Shore with the 19th annual Winter Carnival on March 1, and hope their yearlong fundraising efforts will raise $100,000 to build a home in Waukegan for a single mother of two children, Winnetka Talk reported.  The high school seniors have been fundraising throughout the year with events like bringing a hypnotist to campus and selling books but the Winter Carnival is the biggest event and could help raise some $30,000, Winnetka Talk reported. "We started eMazeMe as a way for family and friends to organize and share their favorite local service providers with the goal of supporting local business and non-profits by keeping more dollars spent locally," according to the company's Facebook page.  Pauly and Piggot created eMazeMe, an online community that allows users to seek bids from local businesses for services, and the Facebook and mobile app is one aspect of the …

Safe-Rides Brings New Trier Students Home At Night

For about 15 years, students have had access to a weekend program that drives them home on late, weekend nights. The program might help explain why there are so few car accidents involving North Shore teens on weekends.

Students at New Trier Township High School who go out on weekends to party with friends, maybe even drink, have Safe-Rides to get them home safely and discreetly late at night. The Safe-Rides program is managed by Boy Scouts of America Northeast Illinois Council, and has been run entirely by student volunteers for about 15 years.  According to one adult supervisor, who asked to keep his name out of print because, as he put it, "the kids do all the work, I can't take any credit," the Safe-Rides program has prevented car accidents with teen driviers.  "As long as the Safe-Rides program has been running in the New Trier district, there have been no fatalities or series accidents on the nights we were operating," he said. "There's something …

Trevians Beat GBS Titans for First Time Since 2006

New Trier beat Glenbrook South 31 to 21 during Friday Night's game at Northfield, the "Sun-Times" reports.

The New Trier Trevians were behind 21-14 in the third quarter of Friday night's game against the Glenbrook South Titans, until Michael Thomas scored a tieing 3-yard touchdown just before the fourth, the Sun-Times reports.  "It was a little frustrating earlier in the game when they kept completing passes for big gains on third down like that," New Trier linebacker Graham King told CSL Insider. "We just had to keep fighting. Good defenses can overcome things like that." After that, the Trevians just kept scoring — landing a 22-yard field goal with 7:37 on the clock and another two yard touch down with 1:33 remaining, according to the Sun-Times. "All night, we couldn't run the ball inside," GBS coach Mike Noll told CSL Insider. "Down the …

PHOTOS: Winnetka Home Gets Complete Makeover by New Trier Native

Acclaimed interior designer and former New Trier student redesigns an entire Winnetka home on Old Green Bay Road.

Terri Weinstein, owner and mastermind behind Terri Weinstein Design, Inc. of Highland Park, spent an entire year making a Winnetka home on Old Green Bay Road a labor of love. “It was incredible,” said Weinstein of the project. “I had worked with the homeowners before when we redid their kitchen, so I have a long, ongoing relationship with them. When they decided to have another child, expand their sunroom and master bedroom suite and increase the number of children’s rooms, we did the major expansion project.” Weinstein kept the exact address of the home on Old Green Bay Road and the project’s budget under wraps to maintain client confidentiality. However, the New Trier Township High School graduate of 1965 says she has a special work …

New Trier Grad Simplifies Chicago Parking Nightmare

A Winnetka native is developing a tech startup called SpotHero aimed at eliminating the headache of parking downtown.

From a Cubs game at Wrigley Stadium to an afternoon at the Shedd Aquarium, the frustration of finding a parking space in some of the busiest neighborhoods in Chicago can sometimes overshadow the fun of the trip. However, Winnetka native and New Trier High School graduate Mark Lawrence, 26, is hoping to change that. Joined by partners Jeremy Smith and Larry Kiss, Lawrence has developed "SpotHero," a website and smartphone app devoted to finding cheap and available parking in Chicago. “The idea came from my personal frustrations with parking,” Lawrence said. “You really don’t know where a space is going to be or how much you’re going to pay. You have to drive in circles. Street parking spots may exist; it may not. I thought, ‘How do we make …
