Some NTHS Parents Believe iPads are Too Costly

Some New Trier parents are speaking out against the school's plan to require all students to have an iPad.

New Trier High School's Mobile Learning Initiative will have all students use their own iPad for school by the 2014-15 school year. While some believe this plan will eventually save money for the district in the long run, other parents think that the program is unfair for non-wealthy families, an article by Business Insider states.  “We’re in a wealthy district, but you can’t assume that everyone’s wealthy,” Mary Rita Kropp, a New Trier parent, was quoted in the article. The program pays an average of $620 for the iPad, keyboard, case and applications. Families receive a $270 subsidy, who can then pay $350 for a 16GB version or $450 for a 32GB iPad. Alternatively, families can pay $180 a year for three years in a lease-to-own option or …

Alarcon Gets Boost From Hard Work

New Trier triple jumper looks for medal at State Meet.

After three years on the New Trier High School varsity track team, triple jumper Taylor Alarcon knew he had to do something different if he wanted to finish his senior season at the State Meet Friday and Saturday at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. He went to work after his junior season and by the time he was ready to compete in the Niles West Sectional May 16, he was hoping his effort would pay off. It did. Alarcon won the Sectional triple jump by nearly three feet at 46-00.5 while recording the seventh best distance of any qualifier heading to the State Meet. “He was lifting like crazy,” assistant Trevian Coach Matt Ravenscroft said. “He became a gym rat in the offseason. He made himself stronger and healthier.” Injuries were …

All New Trier Students to Have iPads By 2014

New Trier High School is planning to expand its new Mobile Learning Initiative to all students by the 2014-2015 school year, Chicago Tribune reported.

New Trier High School is embracing a future with more technology such as e-books and iPads as part of its new Mobile Learning Initiative, which will be expanded to include all students in the 2014-2015 school year, but not all parents are thrilled with having to pay extra for the gadgets, Chicago Tribune reported.  The school plans to provide a $270 subsidy for families, who would pay $350 or $450 depending on the iPad version, but Mary Rita Kropp, a New Trier parent told the board that not every family in the district can afford the gadget and “mandating them is a little much,” Chicago Tribune reported.  Elizabeth Lee, a student who took part in a pilot program, told Patch in an 2012 interview that iPad made it easier to takes notes in …

Ipad is a closed environment by Apple. I would think using an open environment such as Android tablets would be a good idea in an educational world. The Apple Ipad would force one to use their applications only, a bad idea for an educational institution such a New Trier.   more ›

Winnetka ZBA Gives New Trier High School’s ‘Netting System’ Green Light

Winnetka trustees are expected to review the proposal in coming weeks.

Winnetka Zoning Board of Appeals voted in favor of allowing New Trier High School to put up a 50-foot netting system around a baseball backstop at the northwest corner of Hibbard and Willow roads, Chicago Tribune reported.  Some Winnetka residents raised concerns that the system could be an eyesore--the system extend a total of 160 feet in length, 100 feet of it is parallel to Willow Road and 60 feet of it is behind the home plate. The Village Board is expected to vote on the proposal in coming weeks, Chicago Tribune reported. Related Coverage

Roderick Bickert, Former New Trier Superintendent, Dies at 85

Former colleagues, friends and family say Bickert showed steady leadership during the closing of the Northfield campus in the 1980s due to declining enrollment.

Roderick Bickert, superintendent of New Trier High School who helped guide the district through tough times during the late 1970s and early 1980s, passed away recently at the age of 85, Chicago Tribune reported.  Former colleagues, friends and family say the longtime educator showed steady leadership throughout the closing of the Northfield campus in the 1980s, listening and showing empathy to anyone. Jim Marran, who chaired the social studies department until his retirement in 1993, recalled that Bickert’s greatest strength was his ability as a manager, “he came to the district when we really needed a manager,” Marran told Chicago Tribune. Got up a little testy this morning. Of course, looking at the bigger picture, the Chicago metropolitan area has a lot to crow about regarding open enrollment secondary education. While the price of admission is the ability to move to the district, there are generally affordable ways to get a great education all over the suburbs.   more ›

NTHS Students Shave Heads for St. Baldricks

Some New Trier High School students went bald to support pediatric cancer research on Wednesday.

New Trier High School hosted it's first ever "Shave-a-Thon" on Wednesday, an event that raised money for St. Baldrick's, a charity that supports pediatric cancer research. The event was planned by three juniors — John Brady, Jack Vorwald and Julian Good — who approached school leaders to organize the Shave-a-Thon. Brady has been volunteering as a "shavee" since 7th grade, and Vorwald and Good first got involved in 5th grade as students at Skokie School in Winnetka.   St. Baldrick’s is a national charity that asks volunteers to collect pledges and shave their heads as a show of solidarity with young cancer patients. More information on the charity, as well as the NTHS event, can be found here.
