New Indoor Baseball Facility to Open in Northfield

Illinois Baseball Academy is scheduled to open a new 5,000-square-feet training center in November.

For baseball lovers who hate training outdoors in winter, Illinois Baseball Academy will soon be offering a new option.   The new indoor training facility, The Yard, 164 Northfield Rd., Northfield, is outfitted with hitting cages, a pitching tunnel and an open area for fielding work.  “The batting cages allow us to give four lessons at any one time,” said Chris Beacome, president of Illinois Baseball Academy. “We are able to move [our cages] and our cables. One space can look different if we move a cage off to a side.”   Want to follow similar articles? Sign up for Winnetka-Glencoe Patch's newsletter or "like us" on Facebook. New Bakery a Boon to Winnetka Commuters

Located in the Metra station, Café Fleurette serves traditional French baked goods.

It’s 7:30 a.m. and Café Fleurette is already out of chocolate croissants, disappointing a few of the many commuters that stop at the tiny bakery in the Winnetka Metra station. It’s just a sign of how popular the spot has become since it opened July 30. Co-owner and Glencoe resident Rachel Beaudry said many locals come in the morning for coffee and a croissant, and stop by again on their way home to pick up bread for dinner. That tendency has led her to consider carrying sandwiches and soups that customers can pick up for a quick meal. “I would like to be a service to commuters,” she said. While train riders are the main audience, as word has spread Beaudry said she’s been seeing more customers, including local kids riding their bikes there…

Winnetka Welcomes New Business, Skandal

The Scandinavian boutique will host a ribbon cutting on Sept. 19.

Katie Cory, a Wilmette resident for 12 years, has opened a Scandinavian boutique store focusing on women’s apparel and gifts.  Skandal, 907 Green Bay Rd., will host a ribbon cutting from 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.  “Scandinavian style fits all taste,” Cory said. “Scandinavians take centuries of practical use and application, and they use the finest materials. They do something in their simplest forms, and it becomes a thing of beauty. Women always want to look stylish and by investing in classic styles that last longer, Scandinavian style is perfect.”  She believes the time is right for a store of this type to succeed.  “Based on all the economic indicators, it looks like we have bounced off the bottom. Foreclosures on homes have …

New Artisanal Grocery Store to Partner with New Trier

The store located at the former Demas Fine Foods, on 414 Linden Ave., is scheduled to open Sept. 7. The business owners hope to partner with New Trier High School programs in the future.

Growing up, Marsha Pesavento loved lingering around the “fancy” food section of grocery stores in Wilmette. Now Pesavento, along with her husband Ray, will be pouring that passion into a new grocery store in Wilmette.  “When I was 6-years-old I loved hanging out and looking at the canned escargot and all this wild stuff that was so exciting,” Marsha said. “I’ve always loved grocery stores.”  The 3,200-square-foot store at 414 Linden Ave. will focus on selling artisanal foods made by people who are completely and wholly integrated into the creation of their product, from sourcing raw materials to the actual production and packaging.  “We feel it’s critical to support local business, as that only strengthens our community,” Ray said.  …

Northfield Resident Concerned with Proposed Dunkin’ Donuts

The store with drive-thru, which is proposed for the former BP location, was sent back to the committee level for further review.

For everyone anticipating a new Dunkin’ Donuts in Northfield, it turns out there is time now for the proverbial extra cup of coffee as the matter was sent back to the committee level for additional review Monday.  The proposed 1,900 square-foot store at the former BP location, 1900 Willow Rd., was referred back to the Architectural Commission for further review on the streetscape along Willow Road, outdoor seating and signage variances.  Some residents who live on Crooked Creek Lane, which is directly south of the proposed store, say the new store and proposed drive-thru could bring traffic, noise and lighting issues.  “I’ve worked hard all my life and I’ve earned the right not to get up at five in the morning,” said Dean Poolis, a …

Northfield Could Get First Drive-Thru Restaurant

Dunkin Donuts has signed on for space at a proposed Willow Road retail building.

After seven years spent vacant, the former BP location at 1900 Willow Rd. could house a 6,500 square-foot retail space including a flagship Dunkin Donuts. The proposed 1,900 square-foot store would include TVs, couches and possibly a fireplace and employ softer signs and lights to add to the more upscale effect and cater to nearby residents. “It’s not your typical Dunkin Donuts,” said developer Mike Chookaszian. “It will be the nicest one you’ve ever seen.” The village’s Architectural and Plan and Zoning commissions reviewed the proposal in July and provided the Village Board with positive recommendations. “We’d like to see the property developed,” said Northfield Community Development Manager Steve Gutierrez. Northfield currently has a …
