Winnetka Native to Open Evanston Brewery

Construction has begun on the Smylie Bros. Restaurant and Brewery, owned by a New Trier graduate who left his career as a commodities trader to become a restauranteur.

Evanston is getting what could the city’s first brewery courtesy of Winnetka native and former commodities trader Michael Smylie. Smylie is opening the Smylie Bros. Restaurant and Brewery in August or September, which will serve a variety of craft beers brewed in house, as well as barbecue and wood-fired pizza, among other offerings.  This is particularly noteworthy in Evanston — once a dry community and the national headquarters of the temperance movement.  “Considering that Evanston was dry … it’s really the first brewery in its history, which is pretty cool,” says Smylie, who graduated from New Trier High School in 1995.  The brewpub, slated to open at 1615 Oak Ave., is also the first restaurant venture for Smylie, who left a career as …

Four New Business Expected in Northfield

From a new taco restaurant to a new animal hospital, the village says it’s excited about the variety of businesses that’s coming to the village.

An online retailer and a dialysis center are among the four new businesses expected to open in Northfield in the near future.  PC Nation is planning to move its online sales operations and a showroom into the building at 500 Central Ave. by end of October, according to Steven Gutierrez, community development director for the Village of Northfield.  “They have a show room and retail area that they are hoping to open before the holidays,” Gutierrez said. “It’ll be in a separate space but at the same address.”  Taco Nano is expected to take over the former Hunan Chef’s space at 1743 Orchard Ln. New Winnetka Boutique Focuses on Oilcloths

Flee Bags will be hosting a book signing on Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with Dr. Barbara Royal, who counts Oprah Winfrey among her clients.

East coast native Suzanne Robin didn’t set out to own a boutique store, much less a store in the Midwest.  “I’d always loved oilcloth and found that it was underutilized, so I bought oil clothes and made a tote one day,” said Robin. The former advertising account executive says oilcloths are great for more than just outdoor products because they are light weight, durable and water repellant.  From making that one tote in 2003, Robin has since relocated her boutique store Flee Bags from a 500-square-foot space in Boston to a space in Winnetka that’s just under 1,000 square feet.  Want to follow similar articles? Sign up for Winnetka-Glencoe Patch's newsletter or "like us" on Facebook.
