Growing up in Highland Park as a Schwartz, I confess I don’t know that much about Lent. Maybe it’s time for that to change. I’m pretty sure I’m going to offend a few people, and quite possibly a lot of people, but I can’t help it. Lent is in the air, and I want to learn a little more about it. After all, if it’s served up at the local grocery store, then I’m pretty sure I should try it. Actually, this grocer doesn’t stock Lent per se. But it does have a tradition of providing Ash Wednesday provisions. That’s right. Taking a break from technology is a worthwhile endeavor.
When I decided to participate in last week’s TV Tune Out, I wasn’t expecting any earth shattering realizations or epiphanies. Technology fasting is a lot like crash dieting: although it can help in the short term, it’s a wasted effort unless you change your habits over the long term. The week progressed pretty much as I thought it would. My daughter and I both took a step back from all of the technological distractions that monopolize our attention and suck time out of the day. I can't say that we were transformed by the experience, but we did learn a little bit about ourselves and each other in the process. Tina, I do think you can give up things that torment you for Lent. Mike, I think Tina was saying that you may be a little anal retentive. BTW the main message Christ left us was to love God and others as much as we love ourself. I am not seeing that from many Christians these days. more ›
