A new report links the village with a struggling Midwest coal plant, meaning bills could soon be higher in Winnetka than its green-energy neighbors.
The promise of cheaper energy may leave Winnetka residents actually paying more for power than their green-energy neighbors, clean energy activists say in a new report by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis released Wednesday. Winnetka is currently contracting with the Illinois Municipal Electric Agency, a group that purchases energy from the new coal-fired power plant Prairie State Energy Campus. The cost of power is projected to be higher than municipalities were originally told because the cost to construct the power plant is almost $1 billion more than expected, according to the report. About 700 families shopped at the Bethel Christmas Store
More than 30 volunteers organized by Kenilworth Union Church traveled to Chicago’s West Side Dec. 19, to support a program that gives low-income shoppers an affordable way to buy Christmas presents for their families. The Bethel Christmas Store, sponsored by Bethel New Life, collects new, quality donated goods and makes them available for purchase as gifts at sharply discounted prices. About 700 qualifying families select their own gifts and pay as little as $1, $5 or $10, typically about 75 percent off retail. Many families pay with “Bethel Bucks” earned by doing such things as getting good grades in school, taking a financial literacy class or volunteering. The following is the second-part of Patch's investigative look at the unsolved murder of Valerie Percy, Kenilworth's first homicide case. Read part one here. Valerie was bludgeoned to death in her bed in 1966, five weeks before her father, Charles Percy, was elected Senator for Illinois. Former investigators claim that a combination of interference from Percy’s political aides, missed opportunities to gather evidence and a police force inexperienced in murders are to blame for the lack of an arrest. Sunday marked the 45th anniversary Kenilworth's first homicide. After nearly five decades, the slaying of Valerie Percy, the daughter of prominent politician Charles Percy, remains unsolved. Valerie, who was 21-years-old at the time, was beaten and stabbed to death in her bed during her father Charles' first run for Senate in 1966. Earlier: New Light Shed on Kenilworth's First Homicide This Sept. 18 marked a particularly poignant anniversary of the cold case with the passing Charles, 91, on Saturday. And while Charles rose to become a Republican leader nationally, Valerie's death continues to resonate along the North Shore. Police continue to follow leads and investigate the homicide. The former senator who grew up in the North Shore died Saturday in Washington D.C.
Former Kenilworth resident and Republican Illinois Senator, Charles Percy passed away Saturday morning at the age of 91, The Chicago Sun-Times reports. Earlier: New Light Shed on Kenilworth's First Homicide Percy, a New Trier High School and University of Chicago alum, died in Washington D.C. He had battled Alzheimer's disease for the past several years, according to the Sun-Times. Read the full Chicago Sun-Times' story.
