Updated: Over 20 Cases of Fraud Linked to Treasure Island in Wilmette

The Wilmette Police Department is investigating 22 cases of identity theft, with the local grocery store as the suspected point of theft in all 22 incidents.

The Wilmette Police Department is investigating 22 cases of identity theft, all citing the local Treasure Island grocery store located at 911 Ridge Rd. as the suspected point of theft, according to police reports.  Out of the 22 cases, nine reported that their card numbers had been fraudulently used in Texas.  The 22 incidents occurred between March 1 and April 14, the reports state.  Updated April 16 Seven more cases of Fraud with the Wilmette Treasure Island as the suspected point of theft have been reported to the Wilmette Police Department, putting the number of identity theft cases linked to the grocery store at 22. Deerfield Woman Sues Barnes & Noble for Identify Theft

One of the customers of Deerfield store takes action against bookseller for not properly securing her personal information.

A Deerfield woman sued Barnes & Noble for invasion of privacy claiming her credit card information was stolen when shopped at the booksellers’ Deerfield store in August and September, according to a complaint filed Monday in federal court in Chicago. Susan Winstead filed the complaint for herself and “on behalf of others similarly situated” attempting to create a class action lawsuit against Barnes & Noble arising from compromised pin pads in 63 of the company’s stores throughout the United States, according to the complaint. The thieves are actually a very small part of the reason the problem goes unsolved. I know that sounds crazy, but its true. I'll illustrate this with a real life example. When I lived in the city, I had my credit card number stolen. The idiot was dumb enough to use my stolen number to pay his phone bill. Commonwealth Edison says fraudulent activities typically increase after major storms and natural disasters.

Information provided by Commonwealth Edison.  ComEd is warning customers to be on the alert for scam artists who increase their activity after major storms and other natural disasters. Following the recent storm that knocked out power to more than 300,000 customers, ComEd experienced an increase in calls about two current scams that could cost customers money and valuable personal information.  Scammers may call or come to your home. Feb.  22 Identity theft - A victim discovered several unauthorized charges amounting to $380.72 made on his CitiBank MasterCard. This occurred sometime on Jan. 31. Earlier: Repairman Discovers Commercial Burglary Feb. 21            Theft - A business owner discovered an estimated $35,000 missing in funds from the business account. This appears to have occurred sometime between Dec. 10, 2010 and Feb. 4, 2012. The case is pending further investigation. Winnetka Police Blotter: Northfield Man Arrested on Warrant

Feb. 4   Assisting another law enforcement agency - A 64-year-old Northfield man was arrested for an outside traffic warrant from Hinsdale police. This arrest was made after the officer was investigating an unattended vehicle parked at the intersection of Maple Street and Sheridan Road. The driver was located, the warrant was confirmed and the subject was taken to the Winnetka Police Department where he was processed and released on bond. His court date is scheduled for Feb. 21. Theft - A victim reported that his bicycle was removed by an unknown person while parked unsecured at a bike rack at New Trier High School's Winnetka campus. Dec. 18 Criminal damage  - A citizen discovered damage done by a vehicle on the park fields at 225 Sheridan Road. Last Week: Winnetka Police Blotter: DUI, Drug Paraphernalia, Missing Packages Dec. 6 DUI - A 24-year-old Evanston woman was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol at the corner of Hill Road and Ridge Avenue at 12:10 a.m. Police also cited her for improper lane usage and for driving on a sidewalk. The charge followed an accident investigation into a damaged tree and a street sign. Identity theft is a horrible crime. To the thief on Hamptondale Ave. they may have thought $220 was a small heist. But, in fact, that amount may have taken a lot of time for the victim to earn. I don't know what makes thieves think they can willingly take someone else's identity freely but this is wrong. I'm glad the law is taking action against these criminals. Winnetka Police Blotter: Two Burglaries Reported Without Stolen Property

Last week: Winnetka Police Blotter: 18-year-old Arrested for Domestic Battery Nov. 27 Burglary - Officers were dispatched to respond to a burglar alarm at a residence on the 500 block of Elm Street. Upon arriving, officers discovered a damaged door open. The glass window to the door was shattered. Several drawers were found rummaged through in the home. Last week's Winnetka blotter: Trespasser in Winnetka Public Library Nov. 1 Possession of a controlled substance – A 51-year-old Glencoe resident was arrested for possession of a controlled substance. The man and a 31-year-old Evanston resident were also charged with unlawful possession of a hypodermic syringe.
