Skating: Not Just for Kids

January is the perfect time to try a new - or old - winter sport.

The other day, a friend called and asked if I wanted to go skating with her. Ice skating? Like the kids and hockey players do? I hadn't skated in several decades and I wasn't sure I'd even remember how. It seemed like a ridiculous idea. Then I recalled my New Year's resolution to try new ways to exercise. Even back in the day of Friday night “open skate” at the local rink, I'd never been particularly good. 'I Didn't Know Winter Was So Fun' Guide

Dog sledding, horse-drawn sleigh rides, sledding, skating, snowmobiling, snow-shoeing and--have you ever heard of skijoring? Get your mittens and balaclava, it's going to be a fun winter!

What: Ice skate right next to Michigan Avenue, taking in the view of the skyline and lakefront. This is a gorgeous place to skate, and has good music to boot.
