IHSA Sets New Rules for Youth Football Practice

"These guidelines are based on the most recent scientific evidence, as well as the expertise of the coaches who will help implement them," said Dr. Preston M. Wolin, a member of the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee.

The Illinois High School Association approved new safety rules Wednesday to limit tackling in youth football practice in an effort to reduce head injuries, reported the Daily Herald. In March, a controversial bill sponsored by State Rep. Carol Sente (D-Vernon Hills) proposing to limit the number of days players could have full contact hitting practice (twice a week) failed in the House committee. The new IHSA policy calls for coaches to gradually increase the time players can participate in preseason practice, along with the number of protective pads they can wear. On the seventh day of practice, players can participate in five hours of full contact drills wearing full pads, according to the IHSA. However, no single practice can exceed …

CJHS Wins Big off the Basketball Court

The Chicagoland Jewish High School basketball team's deep post-season run brought the entire community together and made winners of the Tigers off the court as well as on.

The Chicagoland Jewish High School basketball team won’t win a state trophy this year after falling to Newark, 67-64, during Saturday’s Class 1A Mooseheart sectional championship game. But they won over the Jewish community, garnered the attention of their classmates and alumni and crafted wonderful memories that will last a lifetime. Earlier: Dream Season Ends for CJHS in Sectional Final They truly are champions of their school and their community. “We talk about building memories that’ll last a lifetime, and life is so short,” Coach Marty Dello. “I’m more proud of our kids on what they do off the court.” Because of their Jewish faith, the Tigers, thanks to assistance from the Illinois High School Association (IHSA), had Saturday’s game …

Dream Season Ends for CJHS in Sectional Final

Chicagoland Jewish High School's rally falls short as Tigers drop Sectional title game Saturday night.

The Chicagoland Jewish High School basketball team proved this week that it can rally late to come out victorious in a win-or-go-home game. The Tigers found themselves in such a predicament again during Saturday’s Class 1A Mooseheart Sectional championship game against Newark, falling 67-64. Earlier: CJHS Nips Mooseheart in Sectional, Makes History While the Tigers were able to turn around an 11-point deficit against Mooseheart in the sectional semifinals Wednesday, they were not able to fully recover from a 59-51 deficit against Newark falling three points short at the final buzzer. “We knew we could come back and we did but not enough,” Tigers sophomore Josh Newlander, who led his team with 22 points and 13 rebounds, said. “But we kept …

FOOTBALL: Loyola Ends Record-Breaking Season, Looks Towards 2012

The Ramblers will have a new quarterback in 2012 while trying to get back to the state championship game.

There were no moral victories for Loyola Academy after the Ramblers’ 21-17 loss to Bolingbrook in the IHSA Class 8A state title game on Saturday. It didn’t matter to them in that moment that they had won the Chicago Catholic Blue Conference, set a school record for wins in a season and had advanced to the state championship for the first time since 1993. In the end, a combination of rainy weather and an abnormal amount of mistakes was too much for the Ramblers to overcome. Bolingbrook’s defense held Loyola’s offense in check for most of the night and the Raiders scored with 5:01 left in the fourth quarter to take the lead for good. “The weather conditions are not optimal for our team, but I think we came out and battled and I’m proud of …

VIDEO: Farina's Goal Lifts New Trier in Sectional Semifinal

Jeff Farina scored the only goal in New Trier's 1-0 victory over Leyden that was called early because of lightning storms on Tuesday.

They say timing is everything. And right now New Trier seems to have everything going its way. After a scoreless first half against Leyden in the sectional semifinal at Evanston, New Trier’s Jeff Farina put the Trevians (9-10-1) on top 1-0 six minutes into the second half. Then the weather came. The referees stopped play with 28:24 remaining in the second half because of lightning storms in the area and, after a delay of more than an hour and 30 minutes, declared New Trier the winner on Tuesday. “I don’t know if I’ve been involved in anything like this before, it’s just really strange,” New Trier coach Craig Fairbairn said. “They have to do things; they have to get this game in, this and that.” New Trier moves on to the sectional …

New Trier Girls Soccer: Early Goal Stuns Trevians in Sectional Final Loss

Loyola Academy scored in the first five minutes of the game and New Trier's offense never got a consistent attack.

New Trier coach Jim Burnside knew the importance of seizing the momentum early on. Against Loyola Academy -- whose defense had 23 shutouts coming in to the sectional final -- getting the first goal was going to be critical. So when Loyola’s Carrie Schoeneberger put the Ramblers up 1-0 with an 18-yard strike less than five minutes into the first half, Burnside knew the Trevians were going to fight an uphill battle. Loyola added another goal near the end of the first half and the New Trier offense never generated a consistent attack as the Ramblers finally found some redemption, winning the IHSA Class 3A Evanston Sectional, 2-0, on Friday night. “We call them big-five goals. First five minutes of the game or half and the last five minutes of…

North Shore Baseball: Raiders Win First Regional Championship in 92 Years

With an 11-run outburst in the first inning, North Shore put St. Benedict away early in a 16-0 win.

Playing with the added pressure of a championship drought is never easy. Just ask the Chicago Cubs how things shook out in 1969, 1984 and 2003, among others. But North Shore’s 92-year run without a regional championship in baseball didn’t seem to faze the Raiders on Saturday afternoon. North Shore erupted for 11 runs in the first inning and Jake Kann pitched a five-inning shutout to give the Raiders a 16-0 win against St. Benedict and earn the school’s first ever baseball regional championship. “The last two years we lost to Westminster Christian by one run each year and those were heart-breaking losses,” senior shortstop Jake Gordon said. “We just wanted to win it this year for the guys the last two years who didn’t get to win it and it’s…

New Trier Boys Track: King Leads Strong Distance Crew to State Finals

Tommy King and Leland Later went 1-2 in an exciting 1600 meter run.

Tommy King killed his two-mile last week at the conference finals, running 9:06.8 to set a new conference record. But the New Trier senior wanted to concentrate on the mile, an event he qualified for state in as a freshman. The plan worked for King, who led from the start, and finished in 4:15.53. Junior Leland Later (4:16.04) outkicked Maine South’s Dave Eckhart to complete a 1-2 New Trier finish at the IHSA Class 3A Skokie Sectional on Thursday. “It was great to see, great to have a teammate in there with me,” King said. “Glad to finally be back down where I was last year and hopefully do some damage at state in the event I love.” King went out hard, running a 60-second first lap to take the lead early. Eckhart and Later caught up with …

Trevians' Youth Shows In Season-Ending Loss to Schaumburg

New Trier's rally came up short and the Trevians failed to defend their regional championship.

Through the second half of the season, New Trier coach Scott Fricke has often complemented his young team’s growth and development. Compared to the beginning of the year, the Trevians had grown up and looked like a playoff-ready team. But some of that youth and inexperience finally showed up in New Trier’s regional final against Schaumburg on Friday night. The Trevians lost their composure in the third quarter and couldn’t rally back, losing to the Saxons, 49-46, in the IHSA Class 4A Evanston Regional final. “Regardless of what the reason is, that’s unacceptable. We don’t want to ever lose our composure,” Fricke said. “When you work so hard for something, like these kids did, and you see it going south, it’s hard. This is a young team. It’…
