Construction has begun on the Smylie Bros. Restaurant and Brewery, owned by a New Trier graduate who left his career as a commodities trader to become a restauranteur.
Evanston is getting what could the city’s first brewery courtesy of Winnetka native and former commodities trader Michael Smylie. Smylie is opening the Smylie Bros. Restaurant and Brewery in August or September, which will serve a variety of craft beers brewed in house, as well as barbecue and wood-fired pizza, among other offerings. This is particularly noteworthy in Evanston — once a dry community and the national headquarters of the temperance movement. “Considering that Evanston was dry … it’s really the first brewery in its history, which is pretty cool,” says Smylie, who graduated from New Trier High School in 1995. Brandi Chastain might be best known for her game winning kick in the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup. The gold-medalist is scheduled to hold a soccer clinic at Evanston Township High School.
Brandi Chastain, perhaps best known for her game-winning shootout kick in the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup, will be hosting a soccer clinic in Evanston this June. The gold-medalist is currently playing as a defender and midfielder for the California Storm. The announcement was made by Team Evanston Soccer Club on Wednesday. The clinic will run from June 24 to June 28 at the Evanston Township High School Lazier Field. Girls as young as eight can participate, as well as female high school athletes. Registration is $375 and a total of 160 seats are available. A New Year’s Day baby boy - Samson Chambers was born to Chicago residents Donald and Sheryl Chambers at NorthShore University HealthSystem in Evanston, 2650 Ridge Ave., on Jan. 1, 2013, at 12:41 a.m. The boy came in at 8-pounds, 3-ounces and 20-inches. “I wanted [Samson] to be born on Christmas day and my husband wanted him to be born on New Year’s Day,” Sheryl Chambers said. “My husband got his wish.” This is the fifth child for the Chambers family. The mother said she now has three girls and two boys. “Honestly, for me, I think it’s a normal thing. It was a regular day for me,” Chambers said. “We gave him the name Samson [which is] from the bible. The name means ‘being strong.’” Chambers added that she had family at the hospital …

More than 1,480 ballots were cast in last week's competition and Maine West's Brittany Collins was named the Patch Athlete of the Week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 29 - Feb. 5: Austin Curren, junior, boys basketball, North Shore Country Day – Curren has had point totals of 25, 28 and 32 points in three conference wins for the Raiders. During that time he’s shot 67 percent from the field (29/43) and has turned the ball over only five times. Curren is also averaging 5.5 rebounds per game. Molly Kleppin, junior, girls basketball, Niles West - Kleppin led the Wolves with 15 points in a tough win against Maine South. After reading this success story about ePublishing, it’s no surprise that eBooks are taking off in popularity – or that libraries now lend eReaders to those with an appetite for publishing’s newest medium. Officially our closest contest yet. See who came out on top and won Athlete of the Week!
More than 900 votes were cast, but in the end Evanston’s Josh Irving landed this week’s Athlete of the Week. Irving received 330 votes, or 36 percent. Irving scored a game-high 20 points in Evanston’s 77-24 win against Maine East on Nov. 29. The 5-foot-10 senior drained three three-pointers as the Wildkits shot 10-for-21 from beyond the arc. The win continued Evanston’s undefeated start to the season as the Wildkits improved to 6-0. This week’s contest was also our closest one yet, with Skokie’s Mariyah Henley coming in second place, capturing 284 votes or 31 percent.
