Hall of Famer Andre Dawson Enjoys Book Stall 'Luster'

Fans came from far and wide to greet one of the Cubs' all-time stars, whom they have loved since his 1987 Most Valuable Player season.

“There’s nothing like Chicago fans,” baseball Hall of Famer Andre Dawson said with a heartfelt smile. “The luster of this evening – it will not diminish. It’s your evening. I’m not an author. I’m a retired baseball player.” At 6-foot-3-inches, Dawson, 57, stood ramrod tall and was still cut in a charcoal grey suit Wednesday, compared to the powerful upper body bulging out of his white-and-blue double-knit Cubs pinstriped uniform of a generation ago. He was buoyed walking in by the huge ovation from the overflow crowd in the special events section at The Book Stall in downtown Winnetka. Here was the umpteenth example of the fans’ love affair that hasn’t diminished 25 years after he won the National League’s Most Valuable Player award as a …

Conney's Pharmacy Contends with Chains in Challenging Times

One of the few independent pharmacies in the area uses personal touch to maintain customers and deal with complications, such as federal healthcare policy.

It could be a scene from a Norman Rockwell painting, a vestige of an earlier era, seemingly stamped out of modern society by chain pharmacies. A person stops by his neighborhood pharmacist, who knows the patient by name and who can suggest a specific medication tailored to the customer. For Judith Shaw of Winnetka such a scenario has occurred for her at Conney’s Pharmacy for half a century. “One time I had a sick child on a Sunday,” Shaw recalled Wednesday morning while browsing greeting cards. “I called an emergency number and the owner came down just for me. He gave me what I needed. They have never failed me one single time.” Stay connected with local news when you join our free daily newsletter. Conney’s Pharmacy, with a lineage in …

Quit making excuses Nello, New Trier is just not as good as you think. And even if you removed "disadvantaged" impact from the analysis and then compared schools on "non-disadvantaged" then New Trier would come out even lower. Sorry Nelly.   more ›

Glencoe and Winnetka Ranked Among 'Most Fashionable Towns in America'

A study by Bundle concluded that about 16 percent of Glencoe residents and about 14 percent of Winnetka residents have made at least four high-end clothing purchases in the last 30 months.

Glencoe is the second most fashionable town in the U.S. according to a study by Bundle, a business and consumer rating website, and Winnetka is the fourth most fashionable town. (See the full Bundle ratings here.) The Bundle study, which was first done with major American cities like Chicago and New York, pitted small towns across the country against one another based on the number of households who made "at least four transactions at top-end designer merchants over the past 30 months." According to the study, 15.95 percent of Glencoe households fell into that "fashion-conscious" category. Newport Coast, Calif., topped the rankings with 16.15 percent. Winnetka households came in at 13.74 percent. Bundle's study said 1.5 percent of …

New Trier Raises $15,000 in One Month for Haiti Project

Organizers say they still need about $5,000 to pay for school desks and supplies.

Bring on the bake sales, pizza sales and online donations, as a three-year volunteer project at New Trier High School nears its finish line. After raising $150,000 for a new school in Haiti, students and teachers need about $5,000 more before a May 24 celebration assembly in Northfield. Donate here. The Haitian school, St. Joseph Elementary School in Petit-Goave, shares a special bond with New Trier, where two Haitian security officers have worked for nearly two decades combined. Since moving to Chicago, childhood friends Jean Cayemitte and Maurice Bonhomme spent any extra resources and time trying to rebuild a school in Haiti, originally opened by Bonhomme's father. A few years ago, they asked Carolyn Muir, the service learning …
