New Trier High School offers options such as e-books and used books to keep costs reasonable.
Jason Schwartz has just started his sophomore year at New Trier High School and on the first day of school he was expecting to spend about $200. Instead the cash register soared to $500 and Schwartz described himself as "shocked." “I’m a little exasperated as we are just in high school,” Schwartz said. While school officials say there's no way to define the average cost of books for New Trier students, most students will likely spend hudreds of dollars on books, on top of other school related fees. Schwartz kept book costs low for his family buy purchasing new books which he plans to share with his twin brother. Want to follow similar articles in Winnetka, Glencoe and Northfield? The store with drive-thru, which is proposed for the former BP location, was sent back to the committee level for further review.
For everyone anticipating a new Dunkin’ Donuts in Northfield, it turns out there is time now for the proverbial extra cup of coffee as the matter was sent back to the committee level for additional review Monday. The proposed 1,900 square-foot store at the former BP location, 1900 Willow Rd., was referred back to the Architectural Commission for further review on the streetscape along Willow Road, outdoor seating and signage variances. Some residents who live on Crooked Creek Lane, which is directly south of the proposed store, say the new store and proposed drive-thru could bring traffic, noise and lighting issues. “I’ve worked hard all my life and I’ve earned the right not to get up at five in the morning,” said Dean Poolis, a …

A New Trier senior created a documentary of the people who help keep the school clean.
New Trier Township High School District 203 school board members got a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to keep the school’s two campuses looking their best at their Aug. 20 meeting, thanks to a video documentary made by 2012 graduate Mikey Borushek as part of a senior project. Borushek interviewed custodians on all three shifts to find out what they do, as well as showing them sweeping up mounds of trash left behind by the students. District 203 Superintendent Linda Yonke said the video will be shown to all students in their advisory periods this year. The school board approved a $102-million budget. The growing student body was attributed to fewer students attending private school and families taking advantage of reduced home prices to move into the district.
The New Trier Township High School District 203 school board unanimously approved a $102-million spending plan for the 2012-2013 fiscal year, up about 4.35 percent from what the district planned to spend last year. The budget totals varied only slightly from the tentative budget approved in July, according to Associate Superintendent Don Goers. The biggest change was caused by an unexpected uptick in the school’s enrollment. Instead of dropping from 4,232 students last year to 4,196 this year, as predicted by the school’s projections, the pre-first-day enrollment stood at 4,277. That led the district to add some class sections and the equivalent of 1.35 full-time teachers at a cost of $135,000. Earlier: New Trier Approves Tentative Budget…
