A bike rack, staircase and stone ditch will be installed at Dell Place. The beach near Dell Place will also be open an hour earlier and later from April 1 to Sept. 30.
Opponents of a fence on Glencoe’s Dell Place street ends got a big victory Thursday as Glencoe trustees voted 6-1 to not put a barrier at the street end near the beach. All trustees, except Trustee Joe Keefe, chose to accept the recommendation of the Street Ends Task Force that putting up a fence at Dell Place street end would raise public safety concerns among others. Trustees, however, did not rule out that a fence may be needed at Dell Place in the future. “If you put that fence up the only people that are going to go around that fence are the people we don’t want down there and you are going to make it harder for public safety to get down there when they want to get down there because they are not going to jump or climb the fence,” …

About one out of every four Winnetka homes was damaged in some way by the flooding in July, 2011.
Nearly a year after a July 23 storm caused widespread flooding throughout Winnetka, Village Engineer Steve Saunders made a presentation to the Village Council Tuesday, updating them on the progress made and the many improvements still to come. As many as 1,100 of the village’s 4,000 homes were damaged in some way by the flooding last July, when some 6.6 inches of rain swamped the area in less than 24 hours, Sanders said. “This is as intense a flood as I have seen in my 25 years with the village,” Saunders said. The village had already been working on improving its storm water management systems after significant floods in 2007 and 2008, but Saunders says those would have done little to improve situation in 2011. Now staff is looking …

More than 50 percent of the Class of 2012 at New Trier High School achieved scores that placed them in the top 9 percent of students nationally.
The Class of 2012 at New Trier High School once again turned in excellent performances on the ACT college entrance exam, according to a report presented at the New Trier Township High School District 203 school board July 16. “When 83 percent of the class is in the top 26 percent of the country, that’s an incredible statistic,” said Paul Sally, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. Earlier: New Trier Class of 11 does well on ACT Challenges of High ACT Scores It’s also a statistic that brings its own challenges to New Trier High School, which has campuses in Northfield and Winnetka. “We have to make sure kids feel like they are successful and achieving in the midst of a high-achieving community,” Sally said. With their political careers’ sunset on the horizon, state Sen. Susan Garrett and state Rep. Karen May were roasted and toasted at a dinner in their honor given by the Lake County Democratic Women Monday.
When a call from state Sen. Susan Garret (D-Lake Forest) appears on state Sen. Jeff Schoenberg’s (D-Evanston) cell phone, the initials ‘MSG’ appear. “Now most people think of ‘MSG’ as ‘Ms. Susan Garrett’ (but) it’s also known as monosodium glutamate,” Schoenberg said. “What do the two have in common? Too much, you get a headache!” Garrett, who will retire at the end of this year after serving three terms in the Illinois Senate, was just one target at Monday night’s Lake County Democratic Women’s toast and roast featuring a cross-section of local and state politicians at Deer Path Inn in Lake Forest. The other bull’s-eye was on state Rep. Karen May (D-Highland Park), who will also retire this year after serving six terms in the Illinois …

New Trier Township High School District 203 administrators say the district is in “good shape.” In its operating funds, the district is showing a surplus of $1.3 million, plus a contingency of $250,000.
The New Trier Township High School District 203 school board unanimously approved a tentative $102 million spending plan for the 2012-2013 fiscal year, up 4.35 percent from what the district planned to spend last year. Much of the increase is due to a project to install synthetic turf in the stadium and nearby practice fields at the school’s Northfield campus. The projected increase in operating expenses – not counting capital improvements, life safety work and debt payments, among other things – is 2.43 percent, with projected spending of $93.9 million. On the revenue side, the district is projecting collections of $100.5 million, or an increase of 3.98 percent from last year. It is projecting an increase in operating fund revenue of 2.61…
The pastor said he received "inhumane treatment" while biking through a construction zone on Sheridan Road. Local officials, however, say the stop was not racially motivated.
An Evanston pastor met with Glencoe village officials Monday over a racial profiling claim. Glencoe Police Chief Michael Volling does not believe any prejudice occurred. Both sides are preparing for another meeting July 25 and the possibility of a lawsuit has not yet been ruled out. Rev. Dr. Michael James of Evanston and George Mitchell, the Evanston NAACP President, met with Glencoe Village President Paul Harlow and Volling for approximately an hour Monday to discuss a June 30 incident near the intersection of Sheridan Road and Hogarth Lane where James was issued a ticket for bicycling in a construction zone. James claims that several other bikers who were white passed by at the same time without any questions. “It gives the appearance of…

The Loyola Academy alum and Winnetka native is in Vichy, France, for a 10-day training camp before competing in the 400-meter freestyle and 800-meter freestyle relay events during the Summer Olympics in London.
Between trans-Atlantic travel and a schedule where Conor Dwyer, 23, will hit the pool while still jet lagged, the North Shore native says his first taste of the Summer Olympics preparation was like a Marine boot camp. But the Loyola Academy alum, who will be competing in the 400-meter freestyle and 800-meter freestyle relay events in two weeks, isn’t complaining. The U.S. Olympic Swim Team, including Dwyer, left for Vichy, France, Saturday and went right into the pool Sunday to start more than a week’s worth of pre-Olympics practice. “They like us to get in, swim around and get used to the time zone,” Dwyer said. “Make sure we’re awake during the day and sleeping at night.” Sightseeing will be at a minimum while practice will be Dwyer’…
