Senate District 9 Candidates on the Economy, Medicaid

Find out where candidates Daniel Biss and Glenn Farkas stand on different issues.

Rep. Daniel Biss (D-Evanston) and Glenview resident Glenn Farkas recently shared their views at a debate held at Glenbrook South High School.  See where the candidates stand on the Education and the Pension System. The candidates' answers have been lightly edited.  The unemployment rate in Illinois is almost 1 percent higher than the national average. At the same time, both Indiana and Wisconsin are doing better than Illinois when it comes to jobs. What do you believe we need to do to create more jobs in Illinois?  Farkas: First thing I would do is to repeal the corporate income tax. New Trier Puts iPads in the Classroom

The new initiative will explore technology-driven education opportunities.

This year, more than 600 New Trier High School students will be required to bring an iPad to at least one of their classes as part of the school’s new “Mobile Learning Initiative”. The initiative is the second test phase of a program that aims to determine whether putting Apple iPad computer tablets in the hands of students can help them take notes, replace or supplement bulky textbooks, and lead to new, beneficial methods of testing and instruction. After a smaller pilot program proved worthwhile last school year, the larger initiative was approved in March. Most participating faculty and students took part in summer training sessions, and the school will continue to offer development opportunities and staff support as the program …

Glencoe Resident Falls off Forbes 400 List

Groupon backer Eric Lefkofsky didn’t make it on Forbes 400 Richest Americans list this year.

Groupon backer Eric Lefkofsky has dropped off Forbes’ 2012 ranking of the richest people in America.  The 43-year-old with a net worth of $1.03 billion fell off the list because he hovered too close to the $1.1 billion mark required to make the list, Forbes reported.  “Thirty-two members fell from the ranks of Forbes 400 in the past 12 months, eight more than last year,” Forbes wrote.  Just last year, Forbes named the Glencoe resident as one of 2011’s new billionaires.  Other Chicagoans that fell off the annual list of America’s richest include Nicholas Prtizker ($1.07 billion), CEO and chairman of Hyatt Development Corp., and Mark Pincus ($760 million), Zynga founder, Crain’s reported.  A total of 12 Chicago-area business CEOs made it on …

New Bakery a Boon to Winnetka Commuters

Located in the Metra station, Café Fleurette serves traditional French baked goods.

It’s 7:30 a.m. and Café Fleurette is already out of chocolate croissants, disappointing a few of the many commuters that stop at the tiny bakery in the Winnetka Metra station. It’s just a sign of how popular the spot has become since it opened July 30. Co-owner and Glencoe resident Rachel Beaudry said many locals come in the morning for coffee and a croissant, and stop by again on their way home to pick up bread for dinner. That tendency has led her to consider carrying sandwiches and soups that customers can pick up for a quick meal. “I would like to be a service to commuters,” she said. While train riders are the main audience, as word has spread Beaudry said she’s been seeing more customers, including local kids riding their bikes there…
