Chicago Botanic Garden Unveils New Plant

The Chicago Botanic Garden, along with the Morton Arboretum and the Ornamental Grower’s Association, will introduce three new plants at the Mid-American Horticultural Show this January.

Glencoe’s own Chicago Botanic Garden, in collaboration with the Morton Arboretum and the Ornamental Grower’s Association, will introduce three new plants – the Forever Pink Phlox, the Beijing Gold Peking Tree Lilac and the Crescendo Sugar Maple – at the Mid-American Horticultural Show in mid-January.  “All of the breeding that I do is in the ground [at the Botanic Garden], so I’m truly selecting plants that will work in the ground in northern Illinois,” said Dr. Jim Ault, Director of Ornamental Plant Research, who developed the Forever Pink Phlox. Ault has his bachelor’s, master’s and PhD in botany, but has been doing horticulture for 25 years and “hasn’t looked back once.” He’s been at the Chicago Botanic Garden for 18 years. Years of …

Chicago Botanic Garden Wins Award for its Green Roof

The green roof in Glencoe is both a display garden and a scientific resource.

The green roof garden at Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe recently received the 2012 Award of Excellence from Green Roofs for Healthy Cities.  The 16,000-square foot green roof at the Rice Plant Conservation Science Center serves both as a display garden for visitors, but also as scientific resource according to the Toronto-based company’s website.  A Northwestern doctoral candidate for plant biology and conservation is currently using the green roof to study if they can support native plants and how wildlife pollinates them, according to Medill Reports Chicago.  Kelly Ksiazek told Medill Reports Chicago that native plants grown on rooftops fair just as well as their counterparts on the ground, adding that green roofs could be habitats …

Local Gardeners 'Go Native'

The authors of “The Midwestern Native Garden” are hosting presentations and signings in Wilmette, Winnetka and Glencoe.

It was the lack of butterflies that made Charlotte Adelman realize there was something wrong with her garden. It was populated by beautiful exotic flowers like Chinese day lilies, but her flora failed to attract any fauna. “There they sit doing nothing but being visual,” said Adelman, who lives in Wilmette. “I noticed where there’s native plants they’ll always have bees buzzing around and they’ll be attracting butterflies, so I started working on the idea of having native plants in my own garden.” Along with her husband Bernard Schwartz, Adelman is hosting a series of local discussions and book signings. You can see them at 7 p.m. April 19 at Round Table Books in Winnetka, 10 a.m. April 21 at the Wilmette Public Library and 1:30 p.m. May …

I replaced the "weed trees" with native Red Buds and planted a native garden infront of our home; everything is growing this spring and it all looks beautiful!!! I gave the Midwestern Native Garden book to several people …   more ›
