Glencoe Resident Calls For Ban On Car Cell Phone Use

Village may join Winnetka in outlawing handheld devices use in cars.

If one Glencoe resident has his way, driving through the village while using a handheld cell phone could soon be against the law, just as it already is in Winnetka and Chicago. "More and more, you see erratic driving, and when you pull up to them, they're using their cell phone, and they're not paying attention to their driving," said Mike Macakanja, who has lived in Glencoe for five years with his wife and two children. Last year, about 5,500 fatal car accidents in the U.S. resulted from distracted driving, according to federal statistics. Of those, about one in five involved cell phone use while driving.
