Winnetka Teacher Recognized by New Science Teacher Academy

John Pappas, a science teacher at Carleton Washburne School, is one of 14 Illinois science instructors honored.

  Winnetka teacher John Pappas, 28, was recently selected as one of only 14 Illinois science teachers and one of 240 nationwide, to be honored as an Astellas-National Science Teachers Association fellow by the New Science Teacher Academy, Chicago Tribune reported.  Pappas, who teaches at Carleton Washburne School, will receive assistance from trained mentors who teach in the same discipline, the opportunity to take part in web-based professional development and financial support to attend New Science Teacher Academy’s 2013 National Conference on Science Education in San Antonio, Chicago Tribune reported.

District 36 Schools Named to State Academic Honor Roll

Five schools from Winnekta Public Schools District 36 were given the honor for sustaining high academic performance for three consecutive years.

Winnekta Public Schools District 36 has been given high honors by the Illinois State Board of Education this week. The district has five schools named to the Academic Honor Roll and given the 2012 Academic Excellence Award. The Skokie School, Hubbard Woods Elementary School, Greeley Elementary School, Crow Island Elementary School and Carleton Washburne School are among 454 Illinois schools receiving the award. The schools honored all sustained high academic performances over the past three years.  According to the Illinois State Board of Education, schools that receive the Academic Excellence Award must have at least 90 percent of elementary and middle students meeting or exceeding state standards in reading and math for three straight …

Winnetka Schools Update Entry Procedures

Winnetka Public Schools District 36 schools will now be keeping the interior set of doors locked in addition to locking the exterior front doors.

Following the recent school shooting in Newtown, CT that left 27 dead, including 20 children, Winnetka Public Schools District 36 has updated its entry producers, according to an email a school official sent to parents Wednesday.  “At Crow Island, and in all of the elementary schools, in addition to locking the exterior front doors, we are now keeping the interior set of doors locked,” Dr. Julie Pfeffer, Crow Island School principal wrote in the email. “This way the entrance monitor has additional time to double-check all visitors.”  Pfeffer says in the past the school district has not “tightly practiced” requiring parents to show identification when entering the school but in accordance with the board policy, schools will now be requiring…

Winnetka, Northfield Schools Rank Top in State

New Trier High School ranked among top 10 high schools in the state. Five Winnetka schools and two Northfield schools were ranked among top 50 in the State.

Winnetka and Northfield schools are some of the best in Illinois and Chicagoland, according to a pair of recent Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times rankings. Local schools that made the "top 50" lists include New Trier High School, Greeley Elementary School, Middlefork Primary School, Crow Island Elementary School, The Skokie School, Carleton Washburne School, and Sunset Ridge School. The two publications used different methods to determine school rankings. Isn't anyone interested in the schools that "beat" or ranked ahead of the district 36 schools? Based on the very high salaries paid to teachers, staff, admins and superintendents, shouldn't D36 schools rank w/in the top 5-10?
