Residents Protest Proposed Winnetka Petco

A group strolls through Winnetka denouncing idea of major pet retailer coming to village

About 50 people and 12 dogs took to the Winnetka streets Friday to protest the possibility of nationwide pet chain Petco moving into downtown Winnetka. Angie DeMars, the proprietor of Winnetka’s Noah’s Ark Pet Supply, was one of the organizers. She had demonstrators of both the two-foot and the four-foot variety going through the village before concluding their walk at 714 Elm St., the site of the now vacant building where the Petco may be located. The California-based company has indicated they may be interested in putting an Unleashed by Petco shop at this location, which is more of a boutique style shop for dog owners, as opposed to the traditional design. The building which has been vacant for at least two years had been the home of …

Seriously? Big Box in Winnetka! Our society has enough trouble maintaining class and traditional values. Winnetka is one of the last "Rockwellian" bastions in the area. Some things are better left alone> Not to mention what this would do to Noah's ark- a great store for Winnetka!   more ›

Stashs' Sudden Closing Cost Local Coupon Co. $16,000

Bobby Dubin worked with a Deerfield-based WeDeal.com to sell discounts to his three Highland Park restaurants, asking for 90 percent of the profit up front. Two weeks later, he closed them all.

Bobby Dubin surprised many this week when he closed his three restaurants — Stashs, 2nd Street Bistro and 2nd Street Enoteca. One person he especially caught off guard was Jordan Heller, the founder and CEO of Deerfield-based WeDeal.com. The news meant that Heller had just lost about $16,000. Heller believes he was intentionally swindled. Dubin says he simply ran out of money when he thought he could hold on a little longer. 'He told me what I needed to hear' Much like Groupon, WeDeal.com is an online company that offers coupons for discounted goods, services and food. It started in 2010 and has offered almost 1,400 deals since then, many for Highland Park restaurants like Once Upon a Bagel, La Casa de Isaac and Moishe, Michael's and …

Rintz to Mount Independent Bid Against Greable

Former Trustee Chris Rintz to challenge Caucus' village president candidate; challenger Patrick Livney fails to replace Joe Adams on the Caucus' slate of trustee candidates.

Next April’s Winnetka elections promise to be interesting as former trustee Chris Rintz said he will mount an independent campaign for Village President following Winnetka Caucus Council’s selection of Gene Greable for that post.    More political intrigue could also be forming in terms of the village board elections, where challenger Patrick Livney did not win enough votes to replace Joe Adams on the Caucus’ slate of candidates for Village Trustee.  Incumbents Arthur Braun and Richard Kates led the pack with 436 and 429 votes respectively. Adams, Winnetka’s Zoning Board of Appeals Chair, received 310 votes and Livney came in fourth with 216. In what was at times a raucous atmosphere Monday night at the Skokie School, Winnetka residents …

Saw Livney at multiple school board meetings as he attacked those with whom he disagreed and also attacked the superintendent. I hope we chose trustees with more adult temperament than he has displayed, along with more relevant experience and some demonstrated history of community service. The videos of the school board meetings actually reveal his embarrassing behavior pretty clearly.   more ›

Oakton’s Science and Health Center Only Part of Transformative Master Plan

Student enrollment center, renovated classrooms, student gathering space also part of the five-year plan.

Students will have to wait two years, to 2014, to enjoy Oakton Community College’s new, 93,000 square-foot, $39 million Science and Health Careers Center, a project that began on April 5. But other projects part of the college’s five-year master plan, projected to cost $68.5 million total, will be completed at different times, and some of that work has begun as well. A combination of work on new and existing construction will take place through 2017, and will include the Science and Health Careers Center, the largest single project in the plan, a new student enrollment center, a student gathering area, renovated classrooms, infrastructure improvements and more. Earlier: Des Plaines Park District one of nine in state to receive …

Winnetka and Northfield Businesses Tough Out Weather, Economy in 2011

The Winnetka and Northfield villages saw two businesses close and 10 open in 2011.

On both national and local levels, small business growth is key to economic recovery post-recession, according to U.S. News and World Report. As the country eases itself out of a financial downturn, business communities like Winnetka and Northfield continue to find ways to cut costs and, at times, expand. Store owners battled slow growth and weathered crazy storms this past year. Keep up with business stories on Winnetka-Glencoe Patch Facebook. “From what I’m hearing from the business owners, they are seeing better numbers at the end of the year from last year—not a lot, very small increments,” said Winnekta-Northfield Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Terry Dason. “The general attitude definitely seems to be improving.”   Related: O'…
