Poll: Should Boy Scouts Lift Ban On Gay Members?

An Arlington Heights church this week called on the Boy Scouts of America to lift the organizations ban on gay members.

An Arlington Heights church called on the Boy Scouts of America to lift its ban against homosexual participants. The United Church of Christ handed out fliers Sunday, Feb. 3 asking its congregation to write letters opposing the anti-gay policy, the Chicago Tribune reported. "Our position is that LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) folks, whether they're minors or whether they're adults, have a role to play in our society and our culture," Rev. Rex Piercy told the Tribune. "This (Scouting) organization, which seeks the support of churches like ours, ... stands against the very kind of welcome that we extend to those folks." The youth organization is considering lifting its ban against gay members and leaders, NBC News reported. …

"While it is a relatively new practice that same-sex couples are being granted the same form of legal marital recognition..." Legal, marital, recognized. That is all I meant; not various "unions" no matter how formal, ritualistic or ceremonial. Nor even common, although no evidence indicates it has ever been that. "While the relationship was clearly approved by the wider community, and was …   more ›

Boy Scouts Ban on Gays Could End Soon

NBC News reports the organization is considering ending the ban that has been in existence for decades.

The Boy Scouts of America ban on gay scouts and scout leaders could soon be over, according to NBC News. The news source reports the group is actively considering ending the ban that has been in existence for decades. If the new policy goes through, the ban on gays would be erased from the Boy Scouts of America’s rules, allowing local organizations to decide for themselves if they want to allow gay scouts and leaders, NBC reports.

Three Glencoe Residents Earn Eagle Scout Honor

Bryan Kelly, Sam Liebenson and Nick Robbins all earned the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America.

Three members of Glencoe's Boy Scout Troop 28 — Bryan Kely, Sam Liebenson and Nick Robbins — earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America, which was awarded to them in a ceremony held last Thursday.  To earn the rank, which takes upwards of seven years to complete, the scouts had to go through six ranks, including Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star and Life. They then had to complete a community service project and present to a panel. "One of the best things about the Boys Scouts is that it's one of the only opportunities where high school seniors can mentor fifth graders," said Kelly in a speech at the ceremony.  For Kelly's community service project, he revamped the flower beds and …

Boys Scouts’ Perversion List a Sad Legacy of Abuse

A Winnetka leader from Troop 15 was expelled from the organization in 2002.

The Boys Scouts of America's method for handling allegations of child abuse by local troop leaders was expelling the accused and putting the person’s name on an ineligible to volunteer list, or what has become known as a "perversion list." The list was kept a secret and many of the allegations remained confidential, often not reported to police agencies. Last week, a Portland law firm posted 14,500 of files outlining names and cases of abuse involving the Scouts, according to Huffington Post. Within hours, the firm's website crashed, Huffington Post reported. The list includes troop leaders from around the country, including the Chicago area. It has in-depth information about some cases and just the barest of details about other cases. …
