Meet Jett, A Jewel of a Cat

Patch regularly features pets available for adoption from C.A.R.E. at Evanston's Animal Shelter.

Jett was very scared when he came to the shelter many months ago. He's gradually come out of his shell and blossomed with the love from C.A.R.E. volunteers. A gorgeous, personable long-haired gray cat, Jett can be very talkative. He likes attention, too, as well as fuzzy mice and cat charmers. "What I really love is being petted and cuddle time," Jett says. "Oh, and I love the compliments that I get for my fantastic long, white whiskers." Jett's Stats: C.A.R.E. to Meet Jett? Please come to C.A.R.E., 2310 Oakton St., Evanston, to meet Jett and speak to an adoption counselor. Policeman Serves With a Soft Spot for Birds

This week's Patch Portraits also feature a Niles cancer survivor who became an author and a Glenview woman who changed careers to change kids' lives.

This week's Patch Portraits also feature a Niles cancer survivor who became an author and a Glenview woman who changed careers to change kids' lives. Richard Weiner, a lieutenant with Glencoe's Public Safety Department, has a soft spot for an unusual type of victim: exotic birds. Along with his wife Karen, Weiner runs a bird shelter from his Northbrook home. Together they care for more than 70 homeless exotic birds. Earlier: Check out the entire Patch Portrait Archives. "I was a brand new beat cop, walking a beat, and happened to see a guy walking around with a Moluccan cockatoo on his shoulder. I was fascinated by the interaction," said Weiner. After months of research, he took in his own African Grey and would often bring the bird to …

Animal Shelters Fall on Hard Times

Adoptions and donations drop as economy forces owners to give up their pets.

Heartland Animal Shelter in Northbrook is looking for a home for Sparky, who was rescued from a shelter that euthanizes animals. He was sent there by his owner who lost her home and had no funds to board him. A Refuge for Saving the Wildlife, also in Northbrook, has been looking for a new home for Eddie the Cockatoo for a year and a half. The bird was given up by his owner whose business was crashing. At the Community Animal Rescue Effort (CARE) in Evanston, an older dog was handed over by a woman who had lost her home and was moving in with friends. The dog didn’t live long afterward. “She just died of a broken heart,” said volunteer Erin Marcus. “Those are bad days when we take in animals like that.” The details are always different, but…

We adopted our Akita, Alaska, from Orphans of the Storm as an older dog and he is so great! He is large and a bit scary looking since he is all black, so I feel that our house is very safe from intruders, but with us he is wonderful. He is our third dog adopted from Orphans and they have all been great. I would always adopt from a shelter.   more ›

The Mom Next Door

Four-Legged Friends in Need

Animal welfare groups and food pantries provide assistance for pets whose owners have fallen on hard times

The ASPCA estimates that between 5 million 7 million cats and dogs wind up in shelters every year. The reasons vary, but many are given up by their owners. Nearly half are euthanized because no one adopts them. This weighed heavily in my decision to go to a local shelter, rather than a pet store or breeder, when I adopted a dog back in September. At the time, a staff member at the shelter told me that I was really saving two animals: my dog Kara and the dog she was leaving a space for. The past two years have seen unprecedented overcrowding in animal shelters because of the economy. Many local organizations like Heartland Animal Shelter in Northbrook and Save A Pet in Gurnee, both of which have a no-kill policy, report that pet …

Patch Pets: Purris Hilton and Carlina Looking For New Home

Each week, Winnetka-Glencoe Patch features cats and dogs available for adoption from Heartland Animal Shelter in Northbrook.

Purris Hilton had been adopted from Heartland a few years ago and was in a loving home. Unfortunately, she was returned to the shelter because of family issues and is not faring too well since her return to the shelter. Purris is a stunning black and white cat with a large white fur diamond on her neck – call it her bling. She is very sweet and like her name implies, she loves to purr. She is around 3-years-old, friendly, loves to be brushed and really loves tummy rubs. Carlina came to Heartland from animal control in Southern Illinois and is ready to find her forever family. She is a mid-sized terrier mix with beautiful brindle coloring and she also has the personality to match. Carlina is playful, sweet, obedient, walks well on a leash …
